Subject: 2 people, 2 bikes and a 700 sqft apartment
Ok, I did a search on this group looking for bike storage solutions,
but didn't find anything (other than that eliminate the furniture
post) that could prove useful. Basically, dh and I each have bikes
and no place to put them (I mean, other than in the kitchen, but that
means we can't get in there). We are interested in those bike racks
that lean against the wall (gravity racks?) or some other similar
situation. Basically, we can't really mount something to the walls or
ceiling, a la the hooks, and are searching for something. Any advice
is MUCH appreciated.

Thanks!
Anne

Yep, being there, done that. Even got 100% of my security back. But
some landlords are picky and put "no holes" in the lease.

I have one of these:

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=17452&subcategory_ID=6600

and have an extra pair of the short arms for the back so I
theoretecally could have four bikes on the rack at a time, but have
gone up only to three.

It's OK in quality (I wouldn't do chin-ups on it as I could with my
previous, home-made, non-adjustable wooden rack of a similar design),
and easy to assemble and adjust.

Back in my college days (more than 30 years ago :-( ) I made a simple
bracket (a pencil will do) that I put in my rear wheel to prevent it from
turning (it went through the rear wheel, and jammed the spokes against the
seat-stays).

With this simple item, I could then "park" my bike pretty close to vertical
against an appropriate wall (in a corner so that it would not tip over).

Visualize -- Stand the bike on its rear wheel in a corner so that it can't
tip over sideways. Then put the gizmo through the spokes so the rear wheel
won't turn. Viola!

That HAS to be the all-time world record for the slightest, cheapest,
simplest, most ingenious bike storage system. Future improvements will be
incremental--for example, use a titanium ferrule to hold the pencil eraser.

I don't think anyone pointed out this specific solution:

http://www.rei.com/product/705469

Pole-mount two bike rack. Basically, there's two bike hangers on a
vertical pole. The pole can be telescoped so that it is firmly loaded
against the ceiling and the floor, which are the only places the thing
actually touches the apartment. No holes.

This Topeak B2 is one of several similar designs in the market. I would
try them out, but not particularly fret about the potential stability
problems: two bikes weigh maybe 75, 80 pounds, right?

As long as you fill in the holes with spackle after you move out, why
does the landlord care if you put hooks in the ceiling? Find the studs,
put in 2 hooks per bike, and you're in business.

Actually, if you are creative and are good with tools you can always
come up with a solution. My wife and I have 3 bikes and a tandem and
we are in a 600 sq ft cottage. And we still have things like a full
size dining table, a bed, a guest futon, etc.

Here is the rack I was talking about (and don't have any use for
anymore).

performance sells a rack stand that accomodates 2 bikes below and 2
bikes on top. About $70 AFAIR. Actually, I have one that I don't use
and that I could give away for a fraction of the price. I am in the
bay area.

I would visit the lowes-HD or the like and spend a little time in PVC
tubing department and make my own. Mine hang in the garage like bats in
a cave.

I suppose switching to something like a folding bike is out?
Is there a bike equivalent to renting a parking space?

I have a 750 square foot house, but it's just me, so there's plenty of
room for the bikes once I got rid of the bed.

You know, I think there may be a market for a four-poster bed/bikerack.

He intended us to eat our tomato sandwiches while
standing over the stainless steel kitchen sink.

In fact, that's what stainless steel kitchen sinks
where created for.

Jelly donuts are best eaten while standing, too.

And hot dogs. Especially if there's somebody standing
in front of you.

cheers,
Tom

Nashbar has a few different racks that will take 2 or 4 bikes.
free-standing and spring loaded.

I've also seen stuff at "Storables" brick-and-mortar stores.

Personally, I'd hesitate to buy any freestanding or leaning solution
sight-unseen without someone endorsing that specific model. Sounds tippy
to me.

Another idea: how strict is this no-holes-in-the-wall rule? Can you take a
"what the landlord doesn't know won't hurt him" approach?

Finally, I stored 1 person and 1 bike in 250 square feet, so it can be
done.

Good luck,

Reid

Sell your dining room table (or bed) and put the bikes there. Eat standing
up in the kitchen like God intended.

HTH!

NO, NO, NO! God intended you to eat while sitting on your bicycles.

I take it that you are not allowed to drive nails or screws in the walls.
Leaning shelves sound like a solution, but they may not work with bicycles,
'cause the distance from the wall to the center of gravity of the bikes may
be too great, making them tippy. How about a pole that expands, putting
pressure on floor and ceiling, and hanging the bikes from that? How about
turning your bed into a sort of four-poster, with the bikes on top? How
about a couple of hooks in the shower?
