Subject: ACL knee brace for road riding...any suggestions?
My doctor recently told me that I have a streched/strained
ACL...rollerblading accident 10 years ago. Ever since then, I haven't
been able to pull up on my cranks when I ride and can only push, so I
only have about half power on a full stroke. Anyway, I was looking into
buying an ACL knee brace and noticed the Donjoy and Innovation Sports
brands. Found some interesting reviews based on skiers and MTB'rs but
nothing from road riders.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not too keen on the $800 custom ones,
so I'm looking at the off-the-shelf types...which still go for
$350-550.

Thanks,
Tom

Most of the replies expired, so sorry if this was already suggested.

Have you tried one of those "Cho-Pat" straps? I'd sure experiment with that
and/or some "pedestrian" knee braces before shelling out hundreds of
dollars.

Also, of course, if you have health insurance, why not get it repaired once
and for all? Depending where you live, it's going to be wintertime anyway
soon; spend it rehabbing?

I know it would be a big jump, but you might try a recumbernt. That sure
cured my knee pane, I think only because you can't stand on the pedels.
Also recumbent incourage and reward stinning instead of pushing to hard.

Actually, the Doc told me, based on pushing, pulling, twisting and
proding, that he thought it was my ACL. The Doc, in my opinion, did a
pretty good job of looking at everything. I think I can trust him.
I twisted my knee badly while rollerblading. My only problem in cycling
is pulling up on my cranks. I try not to, but every now and then, when
going up a hill I find myself doing it.

The brace would also be for other sports also. I can push off with my
left leg, but not my right. I can jump with my left, but not my right.
I'm running Speedplay pedals and they seem to do a good job.

If anyone can recommend a good brace, for stuff like basketball,
baseball, etc, I would appreciate it. I thought the same brace might
help in cycling too. My Doc said to get a good one....meaning +$400
type, otherwise, he said, they won't help. I have a little less than 1
centimeter of play in my right knee...if I remember it right.

I'm looking at Donjoy, Innovation Sports, etc...

Thanks,
Tom

Have you talked to a physical therapist? IIRC, most are not big fans of knee
braces if they think support can be achieved by building the surrounding
muscles.

Maybe it can be more complicated than that, if pronation or
supination effects are involved.

And perhaps just getting a leg over a bike while mounting
or dismounting might entail some contorsions at the
knee joint?

I don't know what you think the brace would do for you. I tore half my ACL
playing soccer and was fitted with a Donjoy brace. Its purpose is to keep
your knee from flexing sideways. Cycling moves your knee up and down with no
sideways forces being applied. Although I did use it while playing soccer, I
haven't used it one day for cycling. I am not even sure the ACL is part of
the pulling up effort. Did your doctor actually tell you that?

imho:

Having a chop-meat knee (joint manged in a tumor removal during youth)
I too have some problems. I did notice when I was using pedal straps
a while back, I road smoother. Since I don't like "straps" I've been
fence riding about getting clipless shoes and pedals.

Now back to yoru question, I usually do well with a neoprene brace to
keep the peaces all together when riding. A little vitamin I and I'm
ok. I might need to look into better braces as I get old, so I'll be
watching this thread.

Good luck,

One difference is that you have to twist your foot outward with reasonable
force to get it out of a clipless pedal. Would that hurt your knee?
