Hi, I'm looking for a good hat for running/biking that will provide sun protection for face & neck for 4-5hours outside, while not being floppy and that can handle a breeze without flying off; machine washable but with some stiffness to it. I use a baseball cap for shorter runs/rides and a 'Bridge over the river Kwai' oversized cap with a flap of canvas in the back, which flaps around in a breeze and rustles right near my ears: very annoying. I've seen ones that have a stiff 'carapace' that extends out the back and covers the neck instead of a flap, this is more along the lines of what I'm looking for. Thanks for any tips! rms

These hats are made specifically for runners and such. The hats are light and porous and ventilate well, and have a terry Coolmax sweat band to keep the sweat out of your eyes. Their 'fast split' model has the smaller bill. There certainly may be better hats out there, but for me -- I'm a sweathog and have been using these for the last several years and they do a good job. They're functional.

I have very closely clippered hair and the cap serves not only to keep sweat out of my eyes, but to evaporate it slowly and keep my head cool. Pace caps do fit my melon like a second skin, with no air pocket, so that might be part of the deal. You know, greenhouse effect and all that.

On very hot days I wear a bandanna under my helmet, and I soak it with water. The vent holes in the helmet channel air onto the bandanna, turning it into an impromptu evaporative cooler, and they also come in quite handy for replenishing the water. Also keeps sweat from running down into my eyes. (I try not to get water on the front-most part of the bandanna.) On a recent supported ride I also tried carrying an old towel. I soaked it with cold water at rest stops and sponged myself down, there, and a couple of times between stops. Bill __o
