Subject: Bike Shows?
Hello Cyclists,

I'm now watching the local news. And they just gleefully mentioned the
greatness and fun of my city's car show:
The Appleton Old Car Show.

While watching it I wondered, "Why haven't I ever seen a bicycle
show?" In other words, a show where people, for whatever reason,
showcase their bicycles.

Has anybody ever seen something like this?

Regards,
Cullen

Winnipeg has a regular outdoor show at which most, if not all, of the
significant LBSs have displays. For most Winnipegers, cycling season
lasts from May (or maybe April) to October (or maybe part of November)
in a good year. Most people won't ride on snowy roads and that can
cover all of November, December, January, February, and March, as well
as part of April. Typical years aren't quite that bad. Bottom line is
that for most Winnipegers, cycling is not a big enough issue to warrant
a separate bike show. Most LBSs sell skis and such in the winter.

I checked the Seattle Bike Expo out online [http://www.cascade.org/
EandR/expo/index.cfm].

That looks like a very cool event.

Have you been there? if so, what's it like?

Thanks,
Cullen

It's chock full of frame builders, tandem shops, local advocacy
organizations, race teams, bike shops, etc. There's some shopping to be
done, some browsing. It's pretty neat, but I haven't bothered to go the
last couple of years.

I only go when I'm volunteering at it, and I can get in for free. MO, it's
not worth paying for entry. Then again, I got converted to nuun at this
year's bike expo, so it's probably worth some of the vendors' efforts.

We exhibited twice at the Cascade show. It is one of the best in the
country. I wish there were more of them around. The New York and Boston
shows crapped out, so did the one in LA. This year we will be at Hotter n
Hell and probably the Lancefest as well.

The hardest thing for the shows is to get support and attendance from the
industry companies. There seems to be a trend for shops (and some
manufacturers) to dump a lot of old or excess inventory.

Interbike is for the trade. How do the consumers actually get access to the
new stuff, or see what the industry is doing? With the demise of so many
local shows, I think it is going to be a little harder each year. I have
been talking to various companies that we are friendly with to see if there
is a way to organize things to do mini shows in different areas to bring our
products to cyclists who ordinarily would not see anything new on a first
hand basis and to learn from the company instead of just a bike shop
employee.
