The Chicago Tribune had an article this morning about the cast of
"Breaking Away". It was prompted by Jackie Earle Haley (Moocher) being
up for an Oscar. You can find it (sans the pictures that were in the
paper) at:

Hmmm, 3 of the 5 nominees for Best Actress Oscars this year are over
50 (Helen Mirren, 61; Judi Dench, 72; Meryl Streep, 57). That argues
there are good roles for mature women. Look at Virginia Madsen; she
was considered the hot young actress in the early 80's, fizzled, but
is getting a number of leading roles at the age of 45. I am sure that
if Julia Roberts had an interest in doing some work that there would
be a leading lady role for her; in her case the major reason she seems
to be off screen at the moment is she is interested in doing the
'mommy track'.

Just saw him in a SciFi channel miniseries called the 'Lost room'...

He was in 'Air America' with Mel Gibson.

Hi there.

The only other film I ever saw him (David shall Grant aka David
Grant) in was Bat-21 where he played part of a helicopter crew. He was
forced to walk through a mine strewn rice paddy.

He was in The Deil Wears Prada (2006).

You can read more about his career at:

Since we are breaking away from the thread anyway, I was just recently
wondering what ever happened to Rae Dawn Chong. She appeared in lots
of movies in the 80s and then seemed to disappear up in smoke.

Probably the same thing that happened to Debra Winger or Julia Roberts or Meg
Ryan or Sandra Bullock. There are very few great leading movie roles for
women over 30 and they have enough money saved up that they don't have to
take minor roles if they don't want to.

Sorry, but all of these women are still bringing in audiences to watch
their movies. Just being over 30 is not the kiss of death any longer
for a woman in film, and to suggest that it is is blaming others (men?)
for someone's lack of movie roles.

It may be that Rae Dawn Chong has no more need for movie roles to make
her complete, but that is not because she turned 30. It's easy to blame
Hollywood's fetish with young girls, but that is not the whole story
here. Julia Roberts has appeared in lots of movies over the last 10
years, and she is turning 40 now -- not that 40 is old.

Our bike club showed Breaking Away last month at a local theater. We had
over 150 people and signed up 15 new members.

We had a trivia contest after the movie -- a quiz about silly things in
the movie, especially all the continuity mistakes.

Great writing trumps all though. No one cares about low production values
when the story is good. Breaking Away is as good today as it was in 1979.

My favorite trivium: Dennis Christopher's original name was Dennis
Carrelli. He was an Italian kid who was best known for his role in
which he pretends to be an Italian kid.

I don't want to get away from your thread, but it's still kind of on
topic, what about the guy that played the younger brother in "American

For a small independent movie, they did get a real high quality set of
actors. The one that suprises me the most is Dennis Christopher, who starred
in 2 Oscar-winning movies early in his career, then pretty much disappeared.

He pops up pretty regularly, just not a star. Sort of a major
secondary role in this and that. Of course, he's a lot older and you
have to know what he looks like now.

As far as I know, only as a guest character in 2nd rate TV shows. He no
longer does major movies.
