Subject: Bus and deer ruin reflective commuter vest
From my previous Rain Jacket Removal Survey, I got this story from
Joshua Putnam:

"The last time I regularly commuted with a reflective vest, I stopped
one morning to clear a deer out of the road. Turned out it was still
alive and didn't want to be moved. Since it was a large dark obstacle
on a dark busy road, I took off my reflective vest and strapped it
onto the deer so it wouldn't get hit. I was about to leave the scene
to call the police when a Metro bus ran over the deer at speed despite
the reflective vest. At that point the vest was a bit too messy to put
back on, so I left it with the carcass when we got it unstuck from the
rear axle of the bus."

"There are a few parts of bike commuting on Vashon Island that I don't
really miss."

Just thought I'd share.

Warm Regards,

I'm just imagining the road worker sent to remove the carcass: "Wow, the
deer are wearing reflective VESTS nowadays!"

You think Josh had a weird day, how about the bus driver who had to
explain that he ran over a deer that was wearing a reflective safety
vest?

I don't believe he explained it to anyone but me. No damage to the bus,
and he kept his route on schedule. I didn't report it, and I'm pretty
sure the deer didn't tell anyone.

All this happened less than half a mile from where I was hit by a salmon
while riding. (A bald eagle had just caught the fish and was sitting in
a tree overhanging the road. My bike spooked him, he flew off and
dropped the fish on me.)

The road is a beautiful ride, a steep wooded bank on one side, the bay
on the other, a level road with no intersections or lights for most of a
mile. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jputnam/1805508243/ But mixing
commuters and nature does have its drawbacks.

When the legend is better than the truth, print the legend.

!!!

I've encountered skunks, coyotes, and raccoons within a block of my
house, and all manner of birds in the next couple of blocks, but I've
never had a fish drop onto my head.

Then again, I did once have an owl with a 6' wingspan fatally fly into
the grille of the car I was driving.

News headline from eastern Washington not long ago, motorists on a state
highway were hit by a falling *COW*.

As in half a ton on the hoof, falling a couple hundred feet off a cliff.
Smashed up their minivan but the people weren't hurt; the cow survived
the fall but had to be put down.

Not an accident to have on a bike!

Driving home from a night mountain bike ride on the freeway with the bike on
top of the car, I saw a flash and heard/felt a slight impact, but couldn't
tell what it was.

30 seconds later a guy pulls up on my right side and honks to get my
attention. I roll down the window, and he says, "You have a hawk stuck in
your bike rack!"

So we pull to the side of the road, and it's a GORGEOUS horn-billed white
owl. We weren't sure if it was dead and its claws were extremely
threatening, so what to do? It looked like it was jammed in there tight,
but I finally pulled on one leg rather gently and it just slipped out
easily. Poor thing must have thought my bike's handlebar was a deer antler
or something?

There wasn't a mark on my bike's fork legs or the car or rack, so not really
sure what killed the poor thing, but he was dead as a doornail.

One of the stranger endings to a night ride I recall...

BS (no, really)

On an off road ride my wife had a (dead) mostly-plucked crow dropped
from above, actually struck her top tube.

OK, see, this is *exactly* why I won't ride with a reflective vest!
