Subject: Canadian taxes on parts from US?
Hi there.

Maybe some of the Canadians who have ordered stuff from on-line shops
in the US can help me out.

I recently had some parts ordered from Nashbar in the US delivered
here in Canada. I was shocked t o discover that Canada Border Services
Agency charged me both the Goods ANd Services Tax and Provincial Sales
Tax on the Canadian $ value of the shipment.

Did this agency rip me off? I have ordered from the UK before and have
never been charged Canadian Taxes on parts from there.

Cheers from Peter

Hi again.

I ordered a Veloce long cage derailleur from La Bicicletta in Toronto
Wednesday because the website said In Stock. Thursday they called and
said that is no longer made and would I like to but a Centaur instead
nearly twice t he price of Mirage. Darn it! I don't even want to have
to buy Veloce because Mirage is all I need.

I just checked your link and it goes to a Vancouver store which does
not appear to do mail order. I just emailed them to see if they do
mail order.

Thanks again.

Peter

Ah, the two La Biciclettas. Notice the extraordinarily similar logos?

They're not friends. I can't remember which Vancouver-based organization
the Ontario Bici started out as, but they moved east and hijacked the
Vancouver store's name and branding.

Full disclosure: the Vancouver La Bicicletta Pro Shop is a sponsor of my
bike club, and a lovely place to shop.

Actually, that's very true for UPS but not (in my experience) for
FedEx.

Here's a tip, make sure the packages come in by MAIL.
If they use FedEX or UPS the "fee" they add for "processing"
the border charge will make the tax seem reasonable in comparison.
Canada Post's charge is only $5.

Hello Nash.

I want to say that I really do appreciate the advice I have received.
I just wish I could find a Canadian shop that does mail order so I
could order a Mirage rear derailleur. All the shops in my area say
they can't get one.

Cheers from Peter

Hi Nash.

I know every one pays taxes. I was just surprised that we have to pay
taxes especially Provincial Sales Tax on stuff bought out of country.
I have not had that happen to bicycle stuff I bought from the UK. I
already paid the $5.00 BSC since Canada Post would not release the
package until I did.

Well, you must have just been lucky. Does not matter if UK does not make
their citizens pay we would still have too or it may be it was in the price
or some other concoction.
The US makes theirs pay on the bill and Canada makes us pay here on the US
export(nashbar).
The $5 at Canada Post is just for handling.
You could also get a bill from Customs for handling that is way more. A
minimum of $18 on the first $30. That is why I complained cause the
handling was more than 50% of the shoes I had sent from performance bike.
They say it is completely random so I am just warning you you can refuse to
pay no problems.

Cheers

Everyone pays taxes P. Don't you know.
But on the light side. Do not pay the border services charge. You can get
3 warnings but Nashbar will have to pay in the end. Takes six months.
