Subject: Charity Riders Killed
An article at CNN.Com indicates that two bicycle riders who were on a
charity ride were killed when a truck ran into the van that was
following them. See link below.

Negligent homicide. I hope the truck driver does time for that.
Inexcusable.

Yeah, the truck must have had a *huge* delta-V in comparison to the van
to kill two riders. I predict a stiffer than normal sentence, since
judges and juries (rightfully IMO) take a dim view of people killing
cops (even off-duty).

Also, it sounds like it was a four-lane highway, so the truck *could*
have just gone into the other lane and passed if the driver was paying
attention at all.

Here in Western Europe, cycling on a four-lane highway would be
considered as suicide (and is usually forbidden).

Yeah, well. They weren't in Western Europe and they didn't deserve to die.

At first I thought you were posting offtopic. Then I realized you weren't.
;_;

It sounds like it was a box truck - not a semi-trailer, not that that
precludes the driver having one of those.

I can feel for her because, although I have never been an Alaskan prostitute
dancing on the bar in a spangled dress, I still get very bored with washing
and ironing and dishwashing and cooking day after relentless day.

IN-63 is a four-lane, divided highway in this area:

<http://tinyurl.com/fylgu >

Speed limit is probably 55 mph, maybe 60 in that area (IN just changed their
speed limits on freeways, but I don't know if that applies to non-grade-
separated expressways as well). If the truck was going 55, and the van was
pacing the riders (call it 15 mph), that alone would explain the huge delta,
but there's no excuse for missing the giant "cyclists ahead" banner. This guy
will be looking at some steep charges, and something tells me the local
district attorney won't be in a plea-bargaining mood.
