Small consolation, I know, but it looks like this kid may pay for a long
time for his callous disregard for others' safety. We all know this could
happen just as easily around here. Sadly enough, one of the two cyclists
killed was a fellow Coast Guard pilot and friend of mine, CDR Bill Imle.
Bill and I were neighbors and flew together in Alaska in the mid-90's and
was currently stationed at the CG Aviation Training Center in Mobile AL.
Rest in peace, Bill, you're work is done here. We'll put in a couple of
extra miles in your honor.

Associated Press - September 4, 2007 2:54 PM ET
SPANISH FORT, Ala. (AP) - A Spanish Fort teenager has been charged with two
counts of murder for Monday's crash that killed two bicyclists in Baldwin
County.
The Press-Register newspaper reports that this is the second arrest for
19-year-old Patrick Young Ballard. He was also charged in June 2005 with
hitting and killing another bicycle rider in Fairhope.
In the latest case, authorities allege that Ballard was under the influence
of alcohol and was speeding when he struck 48-year-old William Frederick
Imle of Daphne and 46-year-old Archie Leroy Clemons Junior of Spanish Fort.
The crash happened just before 9 a.m. on Bromley Road, not far from U.S. 31.
Ballard is scheduled to appear before a Baldwin County judge sometime
tomorrow.

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (AP) - Two bicycle riders were killed when they were hit
by a pickup truck yesterday (Monday) morning near Spanish Fort.
Alabama state troopers said it happened just before 9 a.m. on Bromley Road,
about a mile from U.S. 31.
Baldwin County Coroner Jim Small identified the victims as 48-year-old
William Frederick Imle of Daphne and 46-year-old Archie Leroy Clemons Junior
of Spanish Fort.
Troopers said a preliminary investigation revealed the 19-year-old driver of
the pickup lost control of the vehicle in a curve and struck the bicyclists.
The vehicle then crashed into a ditch and overturned, ejecting the driver
and his passenger, also a teenager. Their injuries were not considered
serious.
A trooper spokesman said no charges were filed and the accident remains
under investigation.

here in nyc early morning hours especially sat am are extremely
dangerous--late night drinking etc.
city island is also the most dangerous place to ride a bike ( rode all over
the country) i have ever rode--people going and comeing from restaurants
ahve no idea that others maybe using the street--

BTW, the article doesn't state whether the kid was licensed or not. If
he was, and it was my family, I'd file a lawsuit against the state.
Getting busted with four brews in your blood when you're young and
feisty can be remedied by a fine and a day in jail--but when you kill,
forfeiting your license indefinitely seems to be appropriate.

Something tells me that forfeiting his DL even permanently isn't really
going to prevent this moron from driving. I think 15 years in the state pen
might give him a little "me time" to think about it, however. While hard
time in no way makes up for killing three people, this guy has shown that he
cannot make an intelligent decision about his life and cannot be trusted not
to repeat his fatal (to others so far) mistakes so you've got to put him
somewhere where he absolutely will not drive. I'm also in favor of making
him inelligible for parole as well.
