I am a Psychology student at the University Of Manchester, UK and am conducting a study on communication in online groups. I will be collecting data through the use of a questionnaire. It would be greatly appreciated if you could take the time to fill in the questionnaire by clicking onto the link below. All answers are confidential and the results will be anonymous. You may stop participating at any time. Thank you very much. This link will forward you to the questionnaire: http://www.webpoll.org/psych/laconsent.htm

In 2004, there was a bunch of these from the University of Northern Iowa. I had an interesting correspondence on this topic with the professor in charge and with a dean -- the net of it was that there was some reasonable degree of institutional control in that case. I won't hazard a guess about the research legitmacy of this University of Manchester example. I did take the survey (I do research for a living, and it's hard not to be curious). It's pretty innocuous.

At the end of the poll I was directed there. http://www.webpoll.org I imagine has software set to quickly create custom polls.

There are probably not a lot of universities that want to take the risk of having student-generated content under their URL. Besides, using a site that is already set up for polling frees the student and the university from buying or writing the tools that are already on the polling site. Using a preconfigured site saves a lot of time in a semester or quarter that is already short. I believe that the student is trying to learn something other than how to produce web content. -- When trying to contact me, be polite. Rudeness will not get you anywhere. Larry

They did not ask for any sensitive information. Mostly things like how often you post, and what you like and dislike about the newsgroup.
