Subject: Is this bike salvageable? I think bearings in rear hub are shot?
Hi there - I bought a 70s era Schwinn for $7 at a garage sale when I
started university. 4 years later, I still have the same bike, but
it's developed a fairly substantial problem. I've done all the
maintenance on it myself, and besides this, it is running great, but
it's becoming more and more of an issue. It seems like the bearings in
the rear hub are shot. I can hold on to my frame, and rock the rear
tire back and forth maybe half an inch to an inch. It's so bad that I
had to disconnect my brakes otherwise they'd be stopping me when I
took a corner.

Is this fixable? The bike's in great condition otherwise.

Thanks!

-Michael

Been dealing with similar issues here. Recently we went through
Spring Cleanup around here. I ended up with about 15 old bikes and now
I'm learning bike mechanics hands-on :)
I would say your bearing's completely shot. May have been saveable
initially but it sounds like it stayed loose way too long and probably
chewed everything up inside the hub.
Nothing to lose now; get a few bike tools (and maybe a bike
mechanics book, I got the Hayne's one and like it) and dig in. The
book is great when you're unsure of what you're looking at. Mine is
very pictorial.
I have a canvas tarp about 4 ft. on a side that I use for
woodcarving and seems to be just about right for protecting the living
room floor when I have to use it. I got a 12" canvas tool bag at my
local Princess Auto (Harbour-Freight type store). You'll need a couple
sizes of those skinny cone-wrenches and a small adjustable. The PA
store also had one of those minature grease guns with a (toothpaste-
tube type) tube of grease included for about $6. Great for this job.
Don't cheap out on the cone wrenches; Park's are pretty inexpensive
and they're about the best.
Flat screw driver, some degreaser and a bunch of rags.
Have fun,

Keith

Possibly, but you've probably destroyed the cones as well. For the
effort, time, and money you'd put into fixing the old (persumably 27")
wheel, you could easily buy a new 27" wheel. Heck, depending on where
you live, you should be able to pick up a used one in decent condition
for free or very cheap.
