Subject: Newbie Question About Tire Compatibility
Just bought a Giant Rincon which has 26 X 2.1 Kenda tires on it. I want
to get something more asphalt friendly like Town and Country. The Town
and Country has various size like 26 X 1.9 and 26 X 2.1. Is it possible
for me to use the 26 X 1.9? Sorry if it's been discussed before, I did
a search and nothing came up. Also, if I get the tire, I also plan to
get the Town and Country ATB tube and some wheels. Is this all I need?
Is there some size wheel I need to look for? I'm looking at Nashbar's
wheels now and I don't see any sizes. Thanks so much for your help! =)

I agree with Peter. If you're going to get slicks anyway and will be
running them on pavement/asphalt, might as well get 1.25, 1.5 or even 1
3/8 in. width tires. Then, you'll notice the difference from your fat
tires.

FWIW, I run 26"x1.75 slicks at 55 PSI and the rolling resistance is much
lower than with the stock knobbies. Lousy in loose sand and dirt but I
don't ride in that stuff much anyway.

Hello there.

A couple of things to be aware of.

I don't know if your bike has cantilever or V-brakes. If it has either
of those I suggest If you do get a spare set of wheels try to get them
the same rim width as you have now. Otherwise, if the rim is wider, you
might have to adjust the brakes *EVERY TIME* you change the wheels.

Also, you might like to get a closer ratio gear cluster to use on the
street wheels. You probably don't need as low a gear in the back on the
street unless you use your Mtb for hauling heavy loads. You might also
want a smaller rear cog on the rear cluster if you have a 13 or 14
teeth cog there now. Narrow tyres take much less effort to propel than
wider ones do.

One other thing. I run IRC Smoothies 1.25 inch wide tyres on my Mtb
road wheels. They are great on pavement, dirt road and crushed stone
trails as well as hard packed dirt trails. Is the difference in tyre
width between a 2.1 inch and a 1.9 inch tyre worth the expense and
effort of changing? It would seem to me that you could end up with
tyres that are the same width depending on manufacturer.

Cheers from Peter

Yes. You can use any width (the 1.9 in this case) tire that will fit in
your frame, and since a larger tire is there now, there is no problem
with a smaller one. It will be a bit less spongy riding, so you will
do better on roads. A wider tire is usually more comfortable, but
for street riding I think the 1.9 is more than wide enough.

You are getting an extra set of wheels? OK, this will allow you to switch
back and forth so you can use the same bike for on- and off-road riding.
But if you don't plan to change your terrain often, you could just put the
new tires on the old wheels, and swap tires when you plan a trail ride.

Any standard 26" mountain-bike wheel will do. Keep in mind you will also
want a cassette for that new wheel --- for the road, you might want to
consider a narrower-range cassette.
