I don't care for squirrels very much myself. But as long as they
leave me alone, I'll leave them alone.
Oh, and I don't necessarily know that I trust that this kid was
shooting at squirrels. He could have been shooting at
anything...light bulbs....windows....other students. In any event,
he's a moron, and a swift trip to the pokey might be enough to knock
some sense into him.

That's exactly why I consider them pests - destruction of walls and
wiring. Yes, there's nothing that makes my blood boil more than being
woke up by a squirrel in the wall or ceiling.

It sounds like your house is in need of repair. You can keep a squirrel
out (too big for a small hole) but the mice can get into anything they
can squeeze into.

That's one HUGE caliber! I've never fired anything larger than about
12mm, myself.
(Not counting 3"/50 guns, which are only used against flying
squirrels.)

My dad used to command a howitzer 150mm group but he never let me play
with them, darn. The biggest thing I have fired is a .60 caliber ball
shot 1820's replica, or my 12 gage.

That doesn't bother me as much as having cat fights on the roof at 3:00 A.M.

vermin, but torturing a kid. Yes, there are more idiots in this world
than maybe you think, but I'm never surprised at how many idiots there
are.
Do you feed and cuddle with rats and mice? Wtat's the difference with
squirrels -they're nothing but destructive pests. But I hear they can
be tasty if prepared properly. I suppose that as is true with all
wild food, it depends on what they've been eating.

Perhaps you misinterpreted what I was actually aiming at. The profiles
of many murderers are that they start out shooting small animals and
then graduate to shooting people. If you punish the kid before the habit
becomes part of his personality then you have less chance of being the
parent that raised a rapist/murderer/whatever.

My daughter had a pet rat that used to love getting rides on her
shoulder. I have had mice in my house in Minnesota that just barely
squeezed in through the oil tank fill hole for the main heater. The
squirrels were kind enough to stay outside and be fed.

I shot down a duck with my .22 rifle about 20 years ago, freak lucky
shot, and it tasted too tough since it was a flying bird. The how I shot
it down is the weird part. I told my stepson I could take out a bird
with the .22 and he laughed at that. I just swiveled the gun straight up
while walking and looking ahead and damned if I didn't actually nail a
duck about 300 feet over our heads. Even if I had aimed I don't think I
could have hit it, so it was just blind luck that we had duck for dinner.
I like squirrels for pets since they can just climb up your pants
without shredding you, like my cat tries to do once in a while.

That puts you on my vermin list. I make pets out of them and they are
very friendly once they get to know you. The local squirrels chatter a
bit much, but they have a right to 'talk'.

I had a lot of them in Minnesota since I had a house in the woods.
My wife set up a feeder for the squirrels and birds just outside the
kitchen window and I got some great shots with my 35mm. She also managed
to befriend a raccoon family to the point where the babies would eat out
of her hand. This is in line with my make friends with the dogs policy,
so at least I know when they come out to me on my bike it is for petting
and not chasing. What goes around usually comes back.

I'm from farm country and squirrels are large rodents with bushy
tails. Not much for cute rabbits either. OTOH, with two Scotties, I
don't really need a air rifle - the vermin are on borrowed time.
Had a Spitz that killed his first rabbit on Easter. It wasn't cool
that he was parading around our back yard with the dead rabbit just as
the kids next door did their Easter egg hunt. I know they weren't too
sure if it was the last egg hunt or what...

I should have known, a farmer. You guys live in a different world where
if it can't be butchered and sold it is vermin. I visited my dad in
Arkansas and the end result of killing off the 'vermin' was that the
only wildlife left was an occasional Armadillo road kill. Damned Arkies
extinctified every thing else.

Mostly grain, actually and long ago. More reason to dislike rodents.
And just a service to all of you out there that hate rodent droppings
in your bread.
And I don't much like armadillos, either. But the one you don't want
to hit on a hot Texas summer day is one of those big vultures, like
right after they've lifted off from fine dining. Make you forget all
about the day the skunk got wrapped up in the ventilator.
Never understood what it was about Texas - the road is wide open, the
air is (generally) clear, yet all sorts of wildlife insist on being
nailed. Maybe going 100 mph in the slow lane was the problem. Around
here in Maryland, about all you CAN hit are turtles, snakes and deer
in the season. You even have to drive into DC to get a real shot at
hitting a squirrel.
