Does this stuff work if your tire is completely flat or just if it's
got a slow leak?

I suggest you not use the Slime. I have seen blowouts from just using it.
I use thickwalled tubes that already have something in it. I have had
blowouts using the thinwalls by adding slime to it. Makes quite a mess.

The Thickwall tube can be had at Walt for under 10 bucks and I have yet
to have one blow on me in over 2 years. Of course, this is for a MB or a
Cruiser and not a Roadbike.

A few months ago, I was riding right behind a guy who had a blowout with
Slime. His tire was ruined and the green goop went everywhere. From
what I read, it is just designed to seal tiny punctures. If you have
something terminally wrong with your tire and tube, I can't see how it
could help.

How do you keep from gumming up your pump if your tire has Slime in it?

When you service your tire, make sure that the stem is at the top.

If it is, you put /way/ too much Slime in the tire. I ride pre-Slimed tubes,
and have never had a drop so much as try to come out the valves. It's fluid,
but not that fluid.

I found the Slime to be a bigger hassel than a flat. The sealant kept
plugging up the valve stems, making the valves leak & the tubes
difficult to fill with air.

My experience is v. dated and more about motorcycles.
Having said that in most circumstances on a bicycle I wouldn't bother.
I can change a front tube in 7 minutes easily and a rear in 10, no
comments about how slow that is, I am not racing, out of practice,
and it's very uncommon these days with modern tires. I carry a CO2
inflater, couple of cartridges, at least one spare tube, if not a second
then a patch kit. Sealants CAN work, but not in all circumstances and
they leave a hell of a mess. Also, I could imagine a situation where
it could cover up a minor leak only to have it become catastrophic,
of course that would be at speed in traffic!

If you want to try it as a preventative, then check your tires regularly
and change the tubes if you see signs of leaks.
