Anybody know if there is any statistics on Bikes stolen in US or
Canada each year. Its currently running at 0.5 million in UK per a
year. That's a lot given that about 2.3 million new bikes are sold
each year

from the League of American Bicyclists site:
http://www.bikeleague.org/media/facts/#stolen

"9. How many bicycles are stolen each year?
In 2001, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported an estimated 7,076,000
"larceny/thefts" of which 4.1 percent, or approximately 290,000, accounted
for bicycle thefts. The average value of a stolen bicycle was estimated at
$318, giving a total estimated loss due to bicycle thefts of approximately
$92.3 million. The National Bike Registry estimates that the FBI only hears
about one-third of the bicycles stolen each year."

Its seems anybody who cycles a bike on a regular basic has had a bike
stolen at one time or another. I have had two bikes stolen so far.
Its a shame there is so little data out there about the magnitude of
the problem.

I don't think the stats are gathered at a national level in Canada.
Here is the only thing I found and it is dated

I don't have any real stats at hand, but here's some
local (to me) information:

1/TPStory/?query=Bicycle+thefts >

http://tinyurl.com/yoyj7k

Here's a quote from the above Globe And Mail article:

"Most information about bike theft is anecdotal, but the Vancouver
Police Department alone records $1-million worth of stolen bikes
annually. The department says that's a fraction of the real value
because most owners lack serial numbers or identification and don't
report thefts. No one knows how many parts -- such as handlebars,
seats or wheels -- are pinched from bikes locked outside."

Tom

I can tell you that from about 1967 to 1977 living in Silicon Valley I
had 3 cars, 3 motorcycles, and 2 bicycles stolen. There is probably more
going on now. That's one reason I moved to the boondocks.
