The Tour is becoming a sick mess.

I am so disappointed in the race and after last years thing I even have a
hard time watching it.

from CNN
"He (Rasmussen) should be kicked out of the race by organizers, whatever
the cost," said AG2r team manager Vincent Lavenu.

That's right.

I think the tour is really good this year. The race is not be clearly
controlled as in past years.

Hie thee to a velodrome.

One-on-one track sprint matches are a sight to behold.

All the vueltas and giros and tours are "insiders'" games --
you have to be deeply in the loop of knowing who's who &
what's what, in order to fully appreciate what's going on.

Track racing is more like the trots[*].

Stage road racing is more like a long, lingering thirst
for closure, which can be anti-climaxal like the last
episode of The Sopranos.

Circuit road races are the next best thing to track.

But stage road races are like cricket -- seemingly
interminable and undeterminable to the casual &
uninformed observer.

Besides, track is a purer form of bicycle racing :-)

Do enough civic badgering to get one.

Here in my armpit of the world, we've got an indoor
velodrome, with an inflated roof like the Hubert
Humphrey Stadium.

IIRC, the wooden track comes out in sections to reveal
bleachers underneath, 'cuz the centre of the stadium
is also used for basketball and volleyball.

It's officially called the Harry Jerome Sports Centre,
or sumpthin' like that. It's named after Harry Jerome,
anyways. He was a nice guy, BTW.

So when you do your civic badgering to get a velodrome,
let 'em know the building can accomodate other sports
as well. What you ostensibly want is a comprehensive
Sports Facility. The velodrome part is just an
ulterior motive.

I've heard that Madison Square Gardens was
originally a velodrome.

Yeah, really. I'd turn out to watch even the local races.

The biggest bonus: the proposed site would put it right on the Mount
Vernon Trail, near National Airport--a prime bicycle corridor.
Imagine--DC/MD/NoVA bikies riding to the velodrome and riding triumphantly
home!

*sigh*

I can dream, can't I?

What if we're not lucky enough to have a velodrome nearby? My nearest
velodrome is Trexlertown, PA, about three hours' drive away. Fooey.

Maybe I'll rattle some cages and see what the status is on the proposed
Arlington (VA) velodrome.

I've been attending the larger events at the Dick Lane Velodrome in
nearby East Point, GA. Very much fun indeed. Hopefully y'all will get
one too.
