Subject: Trek Transit - where to buy?
Hi,

We have been looking into bike trailer/strollers. So far the ones on
the top of our list are the Burley D'Lite and the Trek Transit. We
have not seen a Transit in person. It looks great on paper though.
Also, I beleive the transit is made by Chariot carriers, which we have
seen when up in Toronto a few weeks ago.

Does anyone know where we could see/buy a Trek trailer from? We're in
the Cincinnati area and none of the local bike shops that we looked at
seem to carry them. Also the transit is not listed on the Trek
site... are they discontinued?

Thanks,

Kevin

Whatever trailer you buy, ensure that it has a design similar to the
older Burley d'Lite (2006 and earlier) where the wheels are supported by
a frame on both sides. I have seen Trek trailers like this (at least at
Interbike though never on the road), and I've seen cheaper Trek trailers
that are not like this. It's a big advantage to have the frame around
the wheel like that. Don't get a trailer where the wheels thread onto an
axle on one side only. You can still get a 2006 Burley d'lite, but you'd
better hurry as they are in high demand due to the decontenting of the
2007 model. See
"http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.aspx?PART_NUM_SUB='3779-04'".

Also see the Schwinns, see:

and

The Schwinn Mark III has a better stroller/jogger attachment that the
Burley d'Lite, but not as good of a hitch when using on the bike. The
d'Lite is a very small wheel that attaches to the end of the hitch. The
advantage is that you can leave the stroller attachment on while using
the trailer on the bike, then flip the wheel down when you get off the
bike, and use it as a stroller.

The Schwinn Mark II is similar to the 2006 and prior Burley d'Lite. See
"http://www.juststrollers.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=197"

There are some cheaper Schwinn's that have a steel frame instead of a
lighter aluminum tubing frame, but these are too heavy, IMVAIO.

Personally, my advice would be to get the 2006 Burley d'Lite, and hurry!
When your kid(s) are grown, you'll be able to sell it for at least 75%
of what you paid for it. I'm slowly de-Burleyizing as my kids grow. I
sold the trailer to a relative, sold the Piccolo on craigslist (for as
much as I paid for it used on craigslist) and am about to take the child
stoker kit off the tandem and sell it. Great products and great support
if you ever need parts. I just wish that they hadn't changed the trailer
design.

Actually the Mark III does have the same sort of hitch as the Mark II
and the Burley, I saw another photo of it. I saw it for as little as
$170, though the Costco price of $220 includes shipping.

See "http://www.bicycletrailers.com/Schwinn-Mark-III.pro#specs"

I was in Performance in Campbell, CA today, and they had the 2006 Burley
d'Lite and the Schwinn Mark III on display on a rack with one over the
other.

I was very impressed with the Schwinn. It has a nice jogger attachment,
which is included, not an extra cost option. The 2 in 1 cover is also
included (Burley used to charge extra for this, not sure if they still
do. I do see that Burley offers both a jogger attachment and a stroller
attachment, this wasn't the case back when I bought a d'Lite, there was
only a stroller attachment back then.

The big advantage of the Burley is that their hitch attachment is much
nicer. It's probably patented so it wasn't copied. OTOH, the Schwinn
hitch looks like it would attach to a wider range of bicycle types
(Burley sells special hitches to achieve this).

I haven't seen the 2007 Burley d'Lite on sale yet. Maybe Burley thought
better of the redesign and is continuing with the old model.

The best option if price is no object is the 2006 d'Lite with the jogger
attachment. It's also nice to support U.S. made products. But if the
2006 Burley isn't available, then the Schwinn is the next best trailer.

Hopefully this isn't off-putting to you, but I have an older/used Trek
Transit (3 years old) that I'm looking to get rid of because my kids
have outgrown it and we're moving soon. I'd be willing to ship it if
you are interested. I've just posted it on craigslist in Boise.
Here's the link. http://boise.craigslist.org/bab/314207865.html

Let me know if you're interested,

Julia

The Trek Transit has been discontinued; the current models are called the
"Doodlebugs" and are a bit easier to fold up. It's possible you might find a
dealer who still has one of the older ones around, but they were phased out
before the Doodlebugs came into stock, meaning that there was a time frame
where Trek had no trailers at all... which increased the likelihood that any
remaining Transit got sold.
