Subject: Usenet is fatally flawed according to Ed Dolan the Great
|
Anyone who takes what is said on Usenet seriously is an idiot. Why? Because all human conversation requires a moderator (an editor). Without this prerequisite, all you get is nonsensical blather. But blather is not so bad once you accept that you cannot take it seriously. After all, we humans are basically just chattering monkeys and we should strive to have some fun while we do it. The Great Ed Dolan regards anyone with whom he has had extended correspondence on Usenet as essentially a friend! Yes, if you have responded to me and I to you, then that makes us friends in my book. Tom Sherman, Jim McNamara, Jeff Grippe, Chris Foster - all friends. Many thanks to the lot of you for making my dark nights of the soul go better. I would like to invite you over to my house for some Livingston Cellars Red Rose vino and we can have a good laugh at what we have done here on the world of Usenet. We shall soon enough be in our graves. Did we ever have any fun in this world? I think we did here on Usenet. Once I wasn't, Then I was, Now I ain't again. - Epitaph found on tombstone in Ohio graveyard Regards, Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota

What gets said on one thread has no relevance to what gets said on another thread. I could explain everything to even a blockhead like you, but I will not bother since it is an imposition on others to conflate threads. Only you would be dumb enough and tedious enough to do it. Unlike you, I write for the group, just another one of many hallmarks of My Greatness. So then, how can he expect anyone to take him > seriously even though he has been know to state ... [...] Nothing can be explained to a blockhead like you. Your blockheadedness does not permit it. I suggest you consort more with your dog, man's best friend, and less with the denizens of Usenet. I can assure you that you have no friends here despite any delusions you might harbor. Everyone is weary of your constant stalking which leads nowhere. In short, try to get a life if you are capable of it. Regards, Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota

The fallacious conjecture proposed here is that teens all of whom are in a process of finding themselves help one another reach that goal through friendship and at a certain age beyond the teen years when we become adults and have found ourselves we are no longer in need of friendship. Not surprisingly, Ed Dolan has missed the point: 1. It take two to from any kind of friendship. Ed Dolan fails to comprehend this elementary concept as a given. 2. Logical fallacy ... The assumption here is that responding to messages is proof of what Ed Doaln refers to as Usenet friendship. Do not enemies (including Usenet enemies) engage inf bitter disputes (flamewars) in cyberspace? Perhaps this twisted logic is the basis for protests when Tom Sherman periodically takes leave of ARBR. In not responding to Dolan's posts, Ed feels that he has lost his Usenet friend, Tom. For Ed Doaln, Usenet newsgroups (particularly ARBR) are the source from which he garners his sense of accomplishment and self- esteem. Without the lifeblood of the Usenet newsgroup audience (read Usenet friends) to sustain him, Ed Dolan has nothing and is nothing. What a pathetic, shallow existence. > By the way, I was way too intelligent to ever stay a lowly college > librarian. I can't say this any more clearly. I do not hold the man in awe. I do not admire, revere or venerate the man. Nor have I ever, or will I ever, desire , require or be in need of his friendship. I have as much respect for the man as he has for Ed Gin. Maybe he will now understand. I can't help it if Ed is suffering the pain of rejection or remains in denial so as not to suffer the pain of rejection, nor do I particularly give a shit. - Jim McNamara

I have a sneaking feeling that if nobody replied to poor, alone and lonely ED, he would simply wither away and die. It is not in me to be a friend to any man. I am strictly a cat man. They get all my affection and I have none left over for any other creature, not even for one so deserving as Jim McNamara. Mr. McNamara must find some friends other than me. Maybe Ed Gin will take him back into the fold. I must go my own way in this vale of tears. It is just part of My Greatness. We Great Ones are always alone (but never lonely). I urge Mr. McNamara to leave the Great Ed Dolan to the contemplation of his own navel, an activity of absorbing interest that he never tires of. If anyone is clueless about all this, it is Ed Dolan: As usual, errant opinions are stated as facts. Unsubstantiated assertions is all this amounts to. 1. A one-way admiration society??? I found nothing to admire about Ed Gin. It should be obvious to all but the dunderhead Dolan that I despised the guy. 2. Valued his friendship??? There was nothing to value as we Gin and I were no longer friends ... DUH!!! 3. I realized what Gin was more than did Dolan as I knew him much better, but I have long since stopped harping on the subject. I said what I needed to say mad moved on. Dolan has yet to move on and merely regurgitates the same old crap about Gin. You'd think he'd give it a rest by now, but the guy is just fresh out of material. 4. I think that anyone who disagrees with me is not a friend??? Nothing could be further from the truth. I think that anyone who disagrees with me does not share my point of view be him friend or foe ... nothing more ... nothing less. It would be unrealistic to expect someone to always be in complete agreement with you. If this were a one's criterion for friendship, one would end up being friendless. Maybe this is why Dolan is friendless. By his own admission Dolan considers everyone with whom one has communicated with in an internet forum, even though having never been formally acquainted, to be a friend. I guess by his own definition then, Ed Dolan and Ed Gin are friends. Now I ask you, what does Dolan know of friendship? In a nutshell ... nothing. I just had a friend come all the way from England to visit and ride with me. Among other things, he gave me personalized jerseys, books and pictures signed by Lance Armstrong. A lithograph was contained in a box upon which was written ... To Jim, The best friend a man could have ... you mate from across the pond! Roy. Do Roy and I agree about everything? Well, no. Are we still the best of friends? Well, yes. We have a friendship that the lonely, embittered hermit will never experience in a lifetime. 5. Regard for me. Ed Dolan need not feel at all obligated to favor me with responses since in doing so Ed includes me in his internet circle of "friends" and I for one wish to go make this emphatically clear ... Ed Dolan is not now, nor has he ever been my friend. If he considers me to be a friend, he is delusional. Jim McNamara P.S. YES ... Top Post on purpose. It is OK to have sex solely for the purpose of procreation. Any other purpose is a mortal sin and deserving of everlasting hell fire. I urge you to read the lives of the Saints. There you will discover all you will ever need to know about Saintliness. By the way, it is better to marry than to burn, but the single life is best. It is why the Roman Catholic Church is as great as it used to be. A married clergy is an abomination, something that only heretical Protestants are capable of. Well, let's face it, not everyone can be a Great Saint like ME! Regards, Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota

Poor Jim never realized that Ed Gin was a criminal vandal troll and not worthy of being remonstrated with. But Jim is forever clueless. He does not know who his friends are. Any vulgarity I have ever directed to anyone, male or female, has been richly deserved. Many of the former women posters to these cycling newgroups have been truly digusting and a disgrace to womankind. One thing is for sure, I do not believe there has ever been a single lady on any of these cycling newsgroups. Hey, I treat a lady like a lady and a tramp like a tramp. I know that some of you misdirected cretins go just the opposite of that, but that is your mistake, not mine. Only truly vulgar folks resort to sexual innuendo. It is ALWAYS the mark of a cad. It is why Jim McNamara (and Perry Butler of Fergus Falls, Minnesota) are cads and why Tom Sherman is NOT a cad. Agreed. In this regard, I once wrote ... for Ed Dolan, the computer and the Internet are merely tools that fill a social void. By his own admission, Ed lives detached in reclusive solitude, devoid of real- life interpersonal relationships. Absorbed in his own wayward drama, Internet forums have become Ed's cyberspace playpen and serve as ersatz social interaction that only momentarily disrupts his otherwise self-sequestered isolation. You must not have seen my reply in this regard, but I suspect that I have ridden my bike more than many on this forum in the past 8 months (5500 miles... 1186 on my recumbent and 4314 on my "real bike"). My "REAL BIKE" specifications: Frame - Spectrum Cycles/Merlin 60.5cm titanium Component Group - Shimano Dura-Ace 10-spd Brake calipers - Ciamillo Zero Gravity 0G-07 Ti Crankset - FC-R700 Compact (175mm) Chainrings - 50-34 Cassette - 12-23 Chain - Wippermnan (Connex 10S8) Pedals - Shimano Dura-Ace (PD-7810) Wheelset - Mavic Kysrium SSC SL S3 (clincher) Fork - Reynolds UL (43mm rake) Headset - Chris King w/matching Chris King precision headset spacers and stem cap (pewter) Handlebar Stem - Deda Elementi Zero100 Servizio Corse (120mm, Dark Metal Polish) Handlebar - Deda Elementi Newton 31, anatomic (44cm, Dark Metal Polish) Seatpost - Thompson Masterpiece (31.6mm) Saddle - Selle Italia PROlink light Gel Flow (black), Tires/Tubes - Hutchinson Fusion Comp clinchers (700x23 w/gray stripe) Bar Tape - Cinelli cork (black) Ceramic Bearing Upgrades - Full Speed Ahead (CeramicSpeed) for wheelset and Velo Carbon Racing Components bottom bracket and derailleur pulleys I trust that you will agree that a bike of this quality approaching $7000 constitutes a "real bike" and the miles that I've ridden are indicative of someone who devotes a significant amount of time in the saddle and away from the computer upon which I still do spend entirely too much time. > And relax a little. Breathe air instead of bytes. > Eat food instead of Usenet posts. Go somewhere real > instead of cybereal. Get your hands dirty. Eat a peach. > Know what you are, who you are, where you are going, and > don't let the Ed Dolans of the world get you down. Use > 'em to raise you up. I have to say that this is mostly good advise except for that last part maybe about Ed Dolan raising me up although I have to admit, the depths to which he has sunk is uplifting in its own right. In this regard, I once wrote ... It must really suck to be head swollen ... HEAD Dolan. With no one allegedly worthy of his companionship, the reclusive, sanctimonious hermit has little more than ARBR from which to derive meaning in his life. Usenet newsgroups (particularly ARBR) has assumed an exaggerated prominence in his hierarchical order of relevance and emerged as the source from which Ed garners his sense of accomplishment and self-esteem. Regardless of his expressed opinion of the readership, without the lifeblood of the Usenet newsgroup audience to sustain him, Ed Dolan has nothing and is nothing. What a pathetic, shallow existence. Pity the cantankerous, misguided troglodyte. Rest assured that I do breathe real air, eat real food, go places real, enjoy getting my hands dirty and didn't take all of that so literally as not to read the message embedded between the lines and appreciate your concern. Do not misinterpret what that I have written. Know that I am comfortable with what and who I am and with the direction in which I am headed. Know too that, try as they may, the Ed Dolan's and Mike Vandeman's of the world do not, cannot and will not ever define what and who I am. I wish I were in California right about now. The raw weather here in Chicago this time of year is not conducive to riding. - Jim McNamara > cheers, > Tom > > -- > "Silently falling ..." > -- Chris Squire/Fish Out of Water > I'm really at: > tkeats curlicue vcn dot bc dot ca

And, I am not strictly a beer drinker and > asserting that I am does not alter reality. You would have to have been a hospital corpsman in the Navy for 4 years and have had to deal with drunken sailors to know what I am talking about. These guys all got stinking drunk as skunks on beer every god damn fucking weekend. They did not even know what wine was, let alone a good whiskey. A more egregious band of louts you would never want to meet this side of Hell. Furthermore, everyone in the world knows that Chicago and its hinterland is a land of beer drinking louts just as is the enlisted military of all the services (not just the Navy). New Yorkers have some class. I have never heard of anyone from Chicago having any class. Hells Bells, every time Jim McNamara (and Ed Gin, etc.) post to these honorable cycling newsgroups we bear witness to just this fact. Yea, they are low class slobs who only know how to drink beer and make sexual innuendoes when backed into a corner. Tom Sherman, even though I believe he does live in the Chicago hinterland, does not fall into the above class of human being. He spent a boyhood in the lovely state of Wisconsin and this has saved him from a fate worse than death. Thank you Ed, I a top-posting idiot, am honored to be your friend. I have no wish to accumulate enemies. I think its a better than 50% shot that I would enjoy your company. I also don't want to always be around people that always agree with me. Its fine to do every now and then but you need people that irritate as well. However, I don't see any trips to your fair state in my future so I must decline your invitation for now. Please let me know if you every come to NYC. After doing something for you, he feels that he has the right to ask not to be insulted by you publicly. Also, it is up to him to decide what is insulting. It is not up to you. Basically he feels betrayed and there may be some basis for that feeling even though you don't take the things that you say seriously. I might feel the same way he does if I were in his shoes. I heard a quote the other day that I thought you would like. I don't remember it in Latin but the meaning is not lost in translation. It was on an ancient tombstone. It said... "I am what you will become" Peace, Ed.

I tried to help him out with his posts to ARBR since we both hated Ed Gin, the criminal vandal troll who destroyed ARBR. Jim was coming across as nothing but a long-winded bore. He did not want to be helped, but notice how much better his posts are since I remonstrated with him. He is no longer long-winded, just a bore. > I might feel the same way he does if I were in his shoes. Nope, you wouldn't because you are an adult and he is not. You should read his posts on ARBR from several years ago in connection with Ed Gin (Johnny NoCom, Fred, etc.) to see how he does not ever seem to have a clue about how Usenet works. Ed Gin is a fucking criminal vandal troll, but at least he knows how Usenet works. > I heard a quote the other day that I thought you would like. No. It's to make us think about what we're doing and saying. Which is, in a word: nothing of substance. Just a bunch of the same old predictable, circular razmatazz. Think about it. A keyboard is a pretty crummy interface to the real world. A bicycle is a pretty good interface to the real world. (A pair of feet is even better in some respects.) Anyways, you obviously haven't disappeared yet, despite your perceived notions of Ed trying to annihilate you and "make you disappear." Maybe you should forego your recumbents and get back involved with real bikes. And ride them. Get away from the 'puter -- in fact, maybe just turn it off. And relax a little. Breathe air instead of bytes. Eat food instead of Usenet posts. Go somewhere real instead of cybereal. Get your hands dirty. Eat a peach. Know what you are, who you are, where you are going, and don't let the Ed Dolans of the world get you down. Use > 'em to raise you up. The trouble with so many on these newsgroups is that they actually take this shit seriously. I am having a good laugh every time I read and answer a post. If I weren't I would be long gone. You said it best sometime ago when you said screw ego! The trouble is that types like Jim McNamara can never do that. He is mired in eternal adolescence where his self image depends on what others think and say about him. I left that world behind over 55 years ago. Keep up the good work there on the docks of rancid old Vancouver in soggy old British Columbia. Xmas is coming and we would be lost without all that good shit coming from China. Speaking of eating peaches ... No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be; Am an attendant lord, one that will do To swell a progress, start a scene or two, Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool, Deferential, glad to be of use, Politic, cautious, and meticulous; Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse; At times, indeed, almost ridiculous-- Almost, at times, the Fool. I grow old ... I grow old ... I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled. Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach? I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach. I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each. I do not think that they will sing to me. I have seen them riding seaward on the waves Combing the white hair of the waves blown back When the wind blows the water white and black. We have lingered in the chambers of the sea By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown Till human voices wake us, and we drown. - The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T. S. "My messages almost never have anything to do with any topic that is appropriate to any newsgroup." Understand that I am not thick headed and I'm not trying to stand taller than I am, but I'm also not diminutive as Ed would have the readership believe. Ed insults me for the very same reason that he insults others here, for the purpose of making one disappear. He has succeeded with some. If he were 100% successful, he would be a victim of his own success and no longer have a target audience upon whom to spew his abusive invectives. Regardless, what Ed Dolan says of me or anyone else does not define who and what we are as a person. I fail to comprehend why you would consider what I have written to be ego- driven soapbox drivel and consider what Ed write to be anything else. Ed disrespects just about everyone so it is difficult to consider what Ed writes to be an affront to my ego. It is harly as though I have been singled out for such treatment. Your is an interesting perspective though a tad one sided. Like I said above, I wouldn't mind sitting down and discussing this over a couple of drinks. Might even try one of the infamous martinis of yours. I know that Ed hopes that what you've written will somehow motivate me to "stalk" you, but that's just not going to happen. For Christ's sakes, I prove it every time I post. > Can't any of you poor bastards read?" You need at least a couple of my infamous martinis. Y'see: Ed is just being /you/. Mockingly "doing" you (and me and everybody else,) anyway. Talk, talk, talk. There's a mouldy-oldy Rock 'n Roll song called just that: "Talk Talk" (Alice Cooper covered it nicely in his Flush The Fashion album.) I suggest you chill, take a deep breath, and enjoy what's left of your life. And enjoy Ed's pronouncements from a different approach. There's a word -- I'm not sure if its "humility" or "humbleness", but it has to do with not trying to stand taller than we really are. And a bunch of words makes a lousy platform to stand on. That's what Ed's been trying to get through your thick skull. Standing on soapboxes and spouting-off drivel is a waste of time, even if it momentarily makes you feel good, like some kind of drug. You're tripping over your own ego like loose shoelaces, because Ed affronts your ego. Screw ego. "Free your mind, and your ass will follow." -- George Clinton At any rate, I'd really appreciate it if you'd just shuddup and stop clogging my diskspace. klahowya, Tom -- Nothing is safe from me. Tom, I had to give up drinking altogether as it was causing my left foot to go numb. Go figure! > Y'see: Ed is just being /you/. Mockingly "doing" you > (and me and everybody else,) anyway. Wow ... now you will have Poor-Jim (all one name) coming after you, and if you respond to his whing, he will stalk you like he has me. The main thing is never to try to reason with such types. Like Peter Pan, Poor-Jim just never grew up. > Screw ego. That is what I am all about - denigrating ego by exploding it to the nth degree. Sometimes I do not think I have any ego at all, a most dangerous situation if you want to go on living. > "Free your mind, and your ass will follow." > -- George Clinton > > At any rate, I'd really appreciate it if you'd just shuddup > and stop clogging my diskspace. All good things must end, but it seems the bad things go on forever. The only cure is death itself, an end devoutly to be wished for. In the meantime, keep up the good work on those Vancouver docks there in soggy old British Columbia. After all, we need that good shit from China. Did I mention death? Yea, so time for the one eternal verity yet once again: "Once I wasn't, Then I was, Now I ain't again." - Epitaph found on tombstone in Ohio graveyard Regards, Ed Dolan the Great - Minnesota aka Saint Edward the Great - Order of the Perpetual Sorrows - Minnesota

TRANSLATION: I, "Ed Dolan" do not stand by every message I have ever posted to Usenet even though I have asserted that I do. Although my posts often require some explanation, I will defend and justify everything I have ever written even if I have to contradict myself in doing so. What don't you blockheads understand about me being the quintessential blockhead on ARBR??? Must I repeat what I've said in the past so that you cretins understand ... When I am on Usenet I try to be the biggest idiot, asshole and jerk of them all. I set the standard for one and all. I believe I can state with absolute assurance that I am the Greatest Idiot, the Greatest Asshole and the Greatest Jerk that Usenet has ever known in its' long and dishonored history. For Christ's sakes, I prove it every time I post.
