I don't know if there is anyone that reads these posts from a hot (or very hot) area of the world, but I have been considering using a trainer in the summer months, to get some more spinning time in. Yeah I know some of you are saying "what a wimp" and I guess I am somewhat, but my northern blood still is not used to the heat, humidity and intense sun of south Florida. So I guess my question is this: Has anyone else EVER thought of this and tried it? If so how did it work out for you? Anything I need to watch out for, as far as over training? Ken P.S. I WOULD rather be outside riding! -- Messengers and mountain bikers share a common chromosome. ~James Bethea

Never did the trainer thing, but I have occasionally gone to the gym for a spin class, treadmill time, or some weights on afternoons when it was just too hot to safely and effectively do a hard session on the road. Search for workouts on the web. I joined a spin class for track riders to help increase V02max and cadence a few years back and I still run through the same exercises now and then. laters, z

I have used a trainer, acutally rollers, in warm months (now that I live in Texas, there ARE days that are just tooo hot) or even in mild months when it was dark early and I couldn't chance riding the roads (this is the land of the red pickup truck). In the mild months, I'd set it up outside and ride in the moonlight in the cool air. Inside you'll just be sure to have a fan running to help keep you cooled off! Watching old TDF tapes is good, and one of my old favorite stand-bys was the 1989 Worlds. Music (with a cadence of about 90, coincidently) is also good. Shift to big ring, and get up out of the saddle now and then to stretch. Rollers make it MUCH more interesting than a trainer, but more dangerous, too--be careful on the sprints and it's not advisable to watch anything that might get you too excited. My ex used to crash watching Big 10 hoops when he got too excited and forgot he was riding. I've ridden the spin cycles at the club and I've got to say I much prefer rollers. Just not enough to keep me entertained, at least on my own. Maybe the classes are better.... Besides, the improved handling skills you get from riding rollers makes all the difference when you get out on the road--it's awesome. good luck! -- ie ride fast, take chances. I WOULD rather be outside riding! I bought a trainer, but it was for possible use in the winter. To be honest, I have never used it. I figure it is more fun to be outside even when the weather is not perfect. I usually ride just after sun up just before the Texas sun starts to heat things up. I have also ridden some at night when the only other alternative was going out in the middle of a 100 plus degree day. I would almost always rather ride outside than stay indoors, unless I have to. If I lived further north, I would have a tough time with the colder temps, I know.

Heat qualifies as a weather issue as much as cold if its something that bothers you. No need to worry about over training. Trainers are so boring that this would be a rare risk;-) When I lived in the north east and used a trainer I always set it up in front of a tv and either watched mindles movies or if I was real motivated one of the training videos that are available.
