Subject: What I think is Funny about Bikers versus Motorists

The local papers and radio shows were abuzz with all kind of witty oberservations about motorists and bicyclists recently. The reason was a altercation at the August critical mass ride where the cops arrested a few people. The funny thing is that everyone acts like these two groups of people are different in any way. Most people are generally cool, some people are pricks, and motorists and bicyclists are people. But no we need weeks of psychoanalysis about inattentive motorists or agressive cyclists. Sheesh!

The most common form of this behavior I've seen from cyclists is not respecting traffic signals and the right of way of motorists and pedestrians.

I suppose in some perceptions, I might be considered an agressive cyclist -- I tend to "time" my moves (e.g: if I'm crossing a busy intersection, I tend to start going while the last car is clearing the intersection I want to cross, so I have that momentum from a dead stop, to make it across before the next wave of cross traffic. The driver of that last car sees me start to move and freaks out, like I'm on a rocket-bike about to shoot into his passenger-side front door. Grrrrrr. Timing is everything, and there's always that one, 2-left-footed person there to fsck-up what would otherwise be an elegant maneouver. I used to be a 2-left-footed person, myself. I'm not perfect. I can relate. Oh, well. One of my favourite notables is: it's a rainy, stormy day. I'm out in the elements, in my non-traditional, dorky raingear. Some folks would consider it suffering. And the car drivers, in their warm, dry, climate-controlled rolling living-rooms, get angry with me for being ... there, in front of 'em and inconveniencing them. Here I am, trying to deal with just gettin' around, and /they're/ complaining about inconvenience to them, and being mean to me about it!? I guess you 'n I are "aggressive" for being in front of 'em. And the car drivers are passively innocent, because everybody accepts car traffic as a societal norm. So if you drive a car, you can gripe all ya want about every human bean that impedes your desired movements. Maybe even impatiently run 'em over, if you have a good enough excuse. And a good enough excuse is pretty easily consensused. "Aggressive" cyclists -- phfffft!!! cheers, Tom -- Nothing is safe from me. I'm really at: tkeats curlicue vcn dot bc dot ca
