I've just learned how to ride a bike --I'm 15, and I've got money to
burn--, and I'm looking for a hybrid or mountain bike. Are these good
bikes:

Devinci Sydney: http://www.devinci.com/9747_an.html
Devinci Frantik 3: http://www.devinci.com/9685_an.html

I'm basically going to be commuting and doing trail rides. What do you
think? Thanks!!!

If you've got money to burn, get a bike to last a lifetime:

It's perfectly possible for someone to be both young and a retro-grouch.
I'm not so young--I'm 26--but I tend to go for stuff that is apparently
"retro-grouchy," partly because it's more similar to the kind of gear
that's cheap and easy to find for me.

Do ya think "Richard McBeef" might be a troll, too? Just maybe?

"DarkProtoman"--obviously a troll. This is not the way "15 year olds" talk.
Give it a rest, dude.

I would be shocked--SHOCKED--to see anyone under the age of 35 on a
Rivendell. Not to say that they're not good bikes, but they don't strike
me as young-dude bikes.

Come out to Seattle. I can introduce you to a few. Though, to be fair,
most of them are bike mechanics or work in the industry. The cheaper
version is all the people I know riding Bridgestone bikes...

Those might work but they look kinda dorky. I'd recommend a Rivendell, such
as A. Homer Hilsen model.

OK, if we are going to these extremes on suggestions, for use on both
the road and light trail use, what about the Gunnar Cross Hairs:
<http://www.gunnarbikes.com/crosshairs.php >. Full custom geometry for a
$325 surcharge and custom paint for $125, so a total of $1,450 including
a Gunnar/Waterford made fork. Less wait time than Rivendell to get a
bike, and no need to be a "hobbit" (can someone be a retro-grouch at 15?).

1) How much are you willing to spend?

2) Define "trail rides." If that's a multi-use path--paved or crushed
gravel, nothing gnarly, then suspension is overkill and counterproductive.

I would get something more along these lines:

Trek 7000

http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1310000&f=27

Fuji Crosstown 4.0

http://www.fujibikes.com/2007/bikes.asp?id=331&subcat=#

Key points:

No suspension: If you're not going to ride it off any major drops,
suspension is of no use to you.

Real wheels: 32, preferrably 36 spokes, laced 3-cross. Wheel failures
suck, HARD.

Things to consider:

Leave space in the budget for a decent lock (also learn how to use same)
and a set of lights (for when you get caught out after dark). A small
multi-tool is not a bad investment either. A cyclocomputer will tell you
how fast and how far you're going, and for this reason alone is cool.

Finally:

If you have a friend or relation who's knowledgeable about bicycles, you
might want to consider the used bike market. You could get a reasonable
deal--my first "nice" bike was a seventy-five buck pawnshop road bike
which I (literally) rode into the ground.

Looks pretty typical of today's offerings. Frankly, I would try to get
exchange credit for the wheels and seat post. Conventional 36-spoke,
3-cross wheels, built with proper tension and stress relieving [1] will
provide better service. Unless one is racing, the lower weight of a
carbon fiber seat post is not worth the tradeoff in durability and
potential for hidden damage and/or brittle failure.

Unless the trails involve the type of descents that require dual
suspension, a hard-tail MTB would be the better choice. Lighter weight,
greater pedaling efficiency, more reliable/less maintenance and a higher
quality bike for the price.

[1] Ignoring for the moment the controversy over what this actually
accomplishes.
