Subject: What do I do with bent Bontrager Race X Lite tit anodized front wheel ?
I just got into an accident and bent the hell out of the wheel. 2 spokes are
broken. They told me it couldn't be trued. The wheel was only a year old. I
just bought a replacement for $380

Not sure how it happened. I woke up in an ambulance and can't remember
anything.

The wheel *can* be rebuilt, using the original hub. The spokes, including
the special nipples, run about $4 each, and the rim about $95. So you might
keep the hub around to rebuild as a spare wheel at some point.

Hate it when that happens. Have you revisited the scene, to try and
reconstruct what happened? Are there any marks on the frame or fork? Was
this a front or rear wheel?

I haven't been back yet cause it's on a canal trail (no cars allowed). I
also don't remember the exact spot, but I know exactly how far it is from my
house cause of my bike computer. I plan on going back as soon as I can
though. I can't do anything for a few more weeks. I had a few light
scratches on the sides of the brake hoods and pedals. Nothing on the frame
thank god (it's a Madone 5.9). The wheel was a front wheel.

I talked to the shop about fixing it and they told me it wouldn't be worth
it to rebuild it. I don't have any experience at it, so I just bought one.
You sure this rim is $95? That seems way too cheap. I know how to true
wheels , so if I could get a rim for $95 , all I need are the 2 spokes and
then I can rebuild it my self (or learn how).

You'll need to replace all the spokes, or at least the spoke nipples, since
they incorporate something similar to loctite to allow them to stay put
regardless of forces on the wheel (in other words, they can't spin loose if
there's no tension). Rebuilding one of those wheels isn't where I'd start
the learning process either, as acceptable tension is within a fairly narrow
range. However, for a front wheel, it's not too tough. A rear wheel would be
another thing entirely, and I wouldn't recommend trying, particularly since
part of the process of building it involves a precise amount of preload to
each side of the hub to properly stress-relieve it.

On the other hand, at least in the past, Trek would rebuild them back in WI
for a reasonable fee (which still might be a fair amount less than a new
wheel). For a rear wheel this might be worthwhile; for a front, I dunno...
generally people don't need spare front wheels, so not sure I'd bother with
th expense.

Sorry to hear it; glad you weren't hurt worse.
