Well I've never rode in the snow, and that's only because I don't have
studded tires for my Breezer. For me, the coldest temp that I've rode
in was somewhere in the low twenties. And that was cold enough for me.

A quick visit to your local motorcycle shop (and a ~$50US hit to your
wallet) can straighten that right out. I've got a pair of HJC
motorcycle/snowmobile gloves that were intended for sub-zero temps &
high speeds. In the past couple years Massachusetts & New Hampshire
have not gotten cold enough for even mild discomfort with these gloves.
If there's any gripe at all, it's that around 30F or warmer my hands
start sweating way too fast.

Lobster gloves (if your LBS carries them) are like that. I have two
pairs; the Nashbar is good down to 20F, and I only know the PI are good
down to 14F, as that's as cold as it's gotten here since I got them.
But above freezing, either makes my hands sweat, and then traps the sweat.

wind gust and hail! Aboslutly one of the coldest tougest days I spend

This is true.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the north side of the Jet Stream
is where the cold weather is. The south side is where the
warmer weather is. And right underneath it is the soggy
Pacific Northwest.

The Jet Stream whips around like a busted headsaw
in a saw mill. Some people think its movements are
controlled by H.A.A.R.P. And some people think it's
capricious shifts are ascribable to Climate Change.

It's not really how far north or above the arctic circle you are, but
rather where the jet stream happens to lie. That's why places in

Ow.

I just got back home (check the time of this posting.)

I headed out into beautiful snow-melting rain, to
do a little shopping up at 39th & Cambie.

The temp is just hovering around freezing.

On the return trip, the rain decided to be snow
instead, with my helmet visor actually funneling &
scooping snowflakes into my eyes and driving them
under my eyelids, while I was bombing down 39th. Ugh!

Getting one's package frozen is pretty bad.
But eyeballs are directly connected to the brain
(which is also where absessed tooth roots and
inflamed sinuses always aim at.) The brain
is such a sissy wimp.

I found myself sucking it up and growling and
howling (well, sort of singing The Stones'
"Moonlight Mile[*]") at the elements like some sort
of wild predatory beast as I plowed through the
tempest, adamantly not veering my gaze even an
arc-second to the left or right. 'Cuz that would
have certainly invited a real eye-full of snow.

My fingers feel like two 5-packs of frozen wieners.
I can barely open what I went shopping for.

Heaven help me should I have to grasp any sort of
slippery, chrome-plated, hand-held pinching device.
Let alone pass it along to the next person without
fumbling it.

Ice gets ya. Cold gets ya. Wind gets ya. Darkness
gets ya. Humidity gets ya. Airborne precip gets ya.

Winter sux.

Anyways, sometimes helmet visors are good for
keeping precip out of our eyes. But sometimes
they devilishly work against us.

cheers,
Tom

I have both my winter bike's bars completely wrapped in multiple
layers of handlebar tape.

Both bikes have bar ends of one kind or another and not having to
put my gloved hands on bare metal makes a huge difference in how
fast the hands chill down.

+5F last winter.

Coldest this season was this afternoon, at 18F or so (sun was setting, so temp
was starting to drop). With the residual snow and ice from the weekend's storm
(the plows didn't do the greatest job, and the sub-freezing high impeded
melting), today's ride was more treacherous than I cared for once I left the
main streets in my 'hood. I only lost traction completely once, but I managed
to extract from the toe clips fast enough to slide to a standing stop.

It's supposed to hit -1F tonight, but without studded tires, I'll wait until
things have a chance to melt more. I don't have to go anywhere until Thursday,
anyway (homeowners' association meeting).

Much too long ago to remember the exact temperature, but for a couple
of years I had a newspaper route. I got out there at 4:00 a.m. seven days
a week, and rode about five miles on a sheriff's auction special
single-speed, coaster-brake bike, no night equipment but a rear reflector.
The papers (+/- 85 of them) sometimes weighed two or three pounds each,
and I carried them in the traditional front-and-back canvas bags.
Sometimes in about three shifts when they got immense.
I had none of what we now would consider cycling gear, just a plain,
department store coat and a pair of cheap cotton gloves.
Did this in all weather, including heavy snow. Took more falls than I
care to remember when the roads were slick, which is why nowadays I stow
the bikes under those conditions.
And those were also the days when the carrier had to go out and grovel
to the customers for the exorbitant $2.50 monthly fee. Had to pay for the
papers before I could keep any money, of course. Some of those deadbeats
would go two or three months before they had that princely sum on hand to
give to me.
Looking back, I am amazed that I didn't give up bicycles out of furious
disgust. Happiest day of my life was the day I quit that job.

And the dark. And the combination of dark and ice, which makes it very
easy to wipe out. Which is No Fun, especially if you land in slush and
have to finish out your ride soaking wet. And then work 12 hours, put on
wet clothes and ride back home in the dark and ice.

When it gets like that I hang it up until spring.

What's the coldest weather you've rode in?

I spent the winter of 2004/2005 living on a boat in Boston Harbor with
my only transportation being the T & my bikes. We had that record
"cold snap" that year, shutting down schools and such. I believe it was
single digit temps, lows in the early negatives, and they calculated
-20F with the wind. I wasn't logging any 100K joyrides, but I did
still ride every day for fun, food & supplies. The only time I used
the T for my 85 mile round trip work commute. I swear it must have
been 10 degrees colder on the docks and in the navy yard without all
the buildings, cars & people surrounding. It may not seem cold to a
someone raised in a really cold climate, but it seems plenty cold to a
New Englander like myself.

Short Answer: somewhere around 0.

A few winters ago, I found myself cycling to and/or from work in
temperatures of -20 Fahrenheit. Not something I'd care to do too often,
but certainly no worse than scraping ice off of car windows and getting
a cold car started and warmed up at those temperatures.

I should point out that the relative humidity here in Colorado tends to
be on the low side, which makes low temperatures distinctly more tolerable.

-20C to -30C in winters past. Never long rides, usually 20 minute commutes.

Southern Ontario hasn't really had winter this season until a few days ago.
But a mix of freezing rain, ice pellets, wet and fluffy snow made riding
interesting again. The lows have been in the -12C -15C range. Riding though
that gravelly slippery chop on top of slick asphalt is definitely an
acquired skill. I found myself 'remembering' to use leg control more to keep
balance. It feels like a distinct skill set.

Riding a bike in snow is like... riding a bike. You never forget.

Below zero, the insides of my glasses ice up immediatly preventing any
thoughts of outdoor riding. A Colorado winter trip confirmed that.
Temperatures above that just require different clothing options. Wind
can be a factor.

I've only ridden that cold once, and I wouldn't recommend it either.
But wearing XC ski goggles over my glasses did at least keep them from
icing up. Unlike my nose hairs. Don't like nostril icicles!
