Lately I have seen many posts here debating the pros and cons of $5000.00 USD bicycles. I was browsing some on-line Canadian bicycle shops looking for an inexpensive crankset. I was astounded to see the prices for some cranksets. At La Bicicletta (1180 Castlefield Ave Toronto, Ontario M6B 1G1) listed are: SRM Powermeter Amateur 2006 is $1949.00 USD (link: http://www.labicicletta.com/edatcat/us/tlsstore.cgi? user_action=list&category=Cranksets&start=10) SRM Powermeter Professional 2006 is $2599.00 USD (link: http://www.labicicletta.com/edatcat/us/tlsstore.cgi? user_action=list&category=Cranksets&start=20) SRM Dura-Ace Powermeter Professional 2006 is $3199.00 USD (link: same as first above) What possible benefit can these have that would warrant these very high prices? Or is it simply a matter of making some thing just for the to have the most expensive component available? Has any one here ever seen a crank this expensive in actual use? Peter

They are used a lot (considering their ket), but generally by people that compete. FWIW, people that own boats or RVs drop this kind of money all the time. My son puts high end auto stereos that are well over $ 10,000. If a person that was serious about maxing their performance, competitor or not, wants to drop $ 3000 or so to do it, I don't see that it is necessarily excessive. Excessive is a minimum wage worker that has a two pack-a-day cigarette habit. Curtis L. Russell Odenton, MD (USA) Just someone on two wheels...

It is a power meter. Read the full description. But I don't know, either, why a power meter would cost so much. -- Ben Pfaff blp@cs.stanford.edu http://benpfaff.org
