Subject: converting a burley d'lite to haul dog
|
I bought a used Burley D'Lite in the hope of somehow rigging it to haul my 75lb malamute around. The D'lite is designed to carry two children and is the biggest one in the Burley lineup. However, the "floor" of the trailer is a canvas stretched out over the aluminum frame, as are most child bike trailers, and although it's designed to carry 100lbs, I don't think I can just put my dog on the canvas floor and have it withstand the weight. I thought of putting a wooden baseboard of sort, but am afraid that the edges of the wood would rub against the canvas and eventually rip it. In retrospect I probably should have bought just a cargo trailer and rig up some kind of housing on top it, but that would have meant more messing around. Now that I have a D'lite, I have to somehow make this work. If anybody has experience rigging a trailer made for human children to carry a dog, I would love to hear any feedback. Thanks.

We have a Wike dog trailer: http://www.wicycle.com/ldt.htm It's basically a kid trailer with a few mods: - they removed the seats and added a short leash - they attached a rigid plastic floor to the metal frame - they added a foam pad (about 2" thick) over the rigid floor - they shifted the wheel mount points forward to adjust its balance This might give you some ideas. -- Darin McGrew, mcgrew@stanfordalumni.org, http://www.rahul.net/mcgrew/ Web Design Group, darin@htmlhelp.com, http://www.HTMLHelp.com/ "Not all those that wander are lost." - J.R.R. Without being familiar with the trailer, I'd guess that your best bet is a piece of fairly high-density foam rubber glued to the bottom side of a wooden baseboard. That will maximize load distribution and minimize pressure points on the canvas. -- Ryan Cousineau rcousine@sfu.ca http://www.wiredcola.com/ "I don't want kids who are thinking about going into mathematics to think that they have to take drugs to succeed." -Paul Erdos
