From what hear of other parts of North America, the northwest and north
east got soaked, the south west baked, the southeast at least didn't get
bashed by hurricanes.

Hereabouts, southern Ont. all in all, I have to say it was a damned
pleasant summer. Oh, we've been getting some rain of late but for the most
part it has been a good summer, not too much rain but no drought, very few
smog days or even stifling humidity. All things consider you couldn't ask
for a better summer.

How was the summer in your area? Wherever you are?

I rode 100 miles in cold driving rain.

Well, the first five were probably just chilly.

And only ten were probably really driving and stinging.

But I was getting a "nose ache" towards the end, and I'm surprised I
haven't caught cold at all.

It was an interestingly experience. What misery! But nothing like in
the Army. When I had to sleep wet. Ugh!! Crud between your toes and
all.

In Texas, it was hot with the forecast of scattered hotness until fall,
assuming there is a noticeable fall.

My tour of the Alps this year coincided with the best weather I can
recall, and I cant recall how good it was more than 20 years ago. I
was younger and faster then and the weather didn't matter to me
because it was all a big adventure.

From 11 July - 03 August the sun shone and we kept hearing of a heat
wave as we rode in the high country. Besides, heat waves in the Alps
are often punctuated by evening thunderstorms from which we benefited
on the so called hottest days. It rained before we started and Autumn
arrives the last day of the tour.

The Stelvio has had snow showers on and off ever since.

Yes, it's a long climb but exhilarating as you can see from the
scenery.

Check out the web cam at the top in the morning when it is daylight in
the Alps. That's the view across the summit into the Valtellina, the
zigzags in the last two URLs.

So I have read repeatedly how the Alps are warming dramatically and how
snowpack and glaciers are melting very fast. Did you notice any changes
like this during your ride?

Try comparing the glacier in this photo
http://www.trentobike.org/Countries/Europe/Tour_Reports/Tour_of_the_Alps/Gallery/glacier.jpg
whose thumbnail is given for Col Ferret near Monte Bianco on the Tour of the
Alps gallery page at

with the same glacier in the first photo on this page
http://roberts-1.com/t/b06/mb
taken two weeks ago when I got (thankfully) inspired by one of Jobst
Brandt's reports to try getting my bike over a high pass without benefit of
asphalt. I'm guessing that I spent a higher percentage of my time pushing
and carrying my bike than he did.

Yes, there were only moraines where I once saw glaciers but that is
over that last 20years, not just a hot summer.

Northern Alabama got hot suddenly (mid-May), but overall was drier
than usual. Not as hot as "dry" usually means -- I think we've only
tagged 100 two days this summer -- but regularly into the upper 90s.
The combination of little rain and lows below 80 almost every morning
has meant nice riding every morning all summer.

I remember visiting my father in Arkansas in July and the temp was about
98 with 98% humidity. Being used to California all I could do was
practice sweating in place, even in the shade. Ride in that? No way.

In the Phoenix Arizona east valley, summer started out with some
record highs (IIRC, we hit 118F - 47.8C) in June which was a new
record... but after a few really hot days (even by AZ standards) the
rest of the summer has been relatively pleasant. "Only" 100F or so in
the day, down to 80-85 at night most nights. Even a goodly amount of
rain over the last few weeks.

In Utah it's been kinda hot. More 100+ days than average. Headed for
95 today. But if you can stand the dry heat, it's been nice. Good
biking weather most days, but we did have a couple of supercells back in
July that left tornado-like damage in their wakes. Trees uprooted,
housed ripped apart, like that. Kinda unusual for here.

Here in San Francisco, I think the last rain was in April. Since then, high
temperatures have mostly been around 70F. The nicest weather of the year is
typically in September and October, sometimes through November, though days
do start getting shorter then. The rain will probably start again in
January.

yesterday it was horrible... rained almost all day and was windy, until
around 9pm. Saturday was beautiful but yesterday we got 40mm of rain.

California central valley was HOT! Most of July was over 100 degrees
with a few 110+ days thrown in. I just went out for a short ride today
and it was only 95 and no shade so afternoon rides are kind of a pain
when the asphalt is hot under you too.
Now I am ready for Fall and drizzle, as per the usual here.

Once it stopped raining by July it was very nice, although my lawn
never stopped growing; I usually don't have to mow the whole month of
August. Lovely bicycling weather; not too hot, not too windy.
However, it is getting cold two to three weeks early this year, not a
pleasant thought.

I am in the same area as you, though, the great state of Maine.
You are right, a glorious summer.

Here in the greater Seattle area, barely even sprinkled in August; a mostly
sunny June and July. I have no complaints. Farmer's Almanac says we're in
for a cold winter; we'll see.

may was horrible, and we had a lot of rain in june and unstable, humid
most of july. August has been great so far- almost no rain. It seemed
that it rained every weekend (not good for those racing) this summer,
especially in june and july.
