Subject: newb follow up question: scoop on Fuji brand?
|
Appreciate the suggestions from the previous thread, particulary going more to the mountain bike end of the hybrid spectrum than the comfort or road side. I have been doing brand comparisons and looking at the specs and hardware, it would appear that the Fuji brand is a good value. They consistently run about $100-150 less than Trek, Gary Fisher, or Giant for comparable bikes with comparable hardware. Is this "too good to be true" and an indication that Fuji is cutting corners that should be cut? Or do they generally offer good value and acceptable quality at the lower end of the price range?

I would generally agree with one caveat. I should say up front that I've been pretty happy with my Fuji Touring Series bike. However, availability of spare parts can be a problem. Example, try to find a replacement Alex rim in the US, at least the rim that came on my bike. An LBS, listed as a Fuji dealer on the Fuji web site, was unable to get an Alex AL-DA 16 rim. Neither could I locate a source via the Alex website. jeverett3<AT >earthlink<DOT>net http://home.earthlink.net/~jeverett3

I'm not sure that's a fair criterion, as most OEM rims (at least that I've seen) are either difficult to find replacements for, or they're on boutique wheels that you wouldn't want to replace the rims. OTOH, Fuji seems to stay a step behind the leading edge, which may make replacements harder to come by in the future. I.e., when most bikes were 8-speed, Fuji Touring was 7. Shimano came out with 9, Fuji was 8; now that Shimano has 10 speed gear on the ket, Fuji is 9. It's still functional, and staying behind the bleeding edge makes the price attractive, but spare parts may become an issue. Pat Email address works as is.

The quality that they produce is very similar to those other brands you mentioned. The reason, in my opinion, that the price is a little bit less is that Fuji prices their bikes lower to try to grab a slightly larger ket share. There are less Fuji bikes out there being ridden.
