Google sells Usenet access for what it's worth. To pay more is folly.

Usenet is free. Most decent ISPs provide usenet server as part of the
service. And then it's just firing up a freeware newsreader to access it.

It's a bad assumption to think everyone uses an ISP to access the internet.

I'm curious how you think one could access the internet without an
ISP...

Do you have internet service @ work? Do they provide a usenet server?

Likely not.

Yep. Nope. As it turns out, my company buys internet access from a
provider that doesn't provide usenet service. IOW, not all ISPs (only
the decent ones) provide usenet access.

However, there are a number of usenet services available. If you can
afford to buy a computer, you can almost certainly afford to buy
usenet access; I do it so I can get usenet at work, in addition to the
"free" access I have at home.

Which assumes one is accessing the internet from a computer they *bought*.

Although less so than in the past, I can go weeks at a time solely using
computers and internet access provided by others. For example, next week I
will be in Spain and the following week in rural Tennessee - in both cases
accessing the internet via a succession of corporate and hotel resources
which do not provide usenet feeds.

To bring this back to original post, it is a bad assumption to think that
people use web-based usenet interfaces only because they are lame.

Any good free Usenet feeds? (I am not about to change my ISP, since my
current service is "no additional charge".)

No shortage of traffic on my server. You're reading from Google;
their system seems to have been down in multiple newsgroups for
several days.

Try the cyclingforums interface instead. Not perfect, but at least

How about learn to use a real newsreader and access usenet the proper
way? It's much more efficient than those refreshing browser pages. When
it comes to text based discussions, nothing beats a dedicated usenet
newsreader.

If you're really using WebTV, you're probably stuck with what they give you.
Ditto for dial up AOL users.

Folks with "real" ISPs probably have servers available, and just don't know it.
SBC Global customers can go to http://help.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=287
as an example for their settings (this is what I use). Use your ISPs help pages
to find out if they have servers (try searching for "NNTP" or "news").

As for clients, they are myriad.

On Windows, Outlook Express works for some; I use Gravity. Forte makes a nice
reader.

Linux users seem to gravitate to slrn these days. tin and trn are older readers
that still work quite well. I believe Pine can do news as well as email.

Mac is one platform I'm not really sure about.

I'm really using WebTV, it uses it's e_mail reader. I do have the option
of accessing the group through online services though, like Yahoo. I
have a PC hooked up as well (I'm actually accessing WTV networks through
the same ISP I use for my Comp.)

The OP has previously stated issues that preclude this option for him.
I offer the advice most likely to be of value in that instance.

Well, yes. And you could argue that "sick" means "bad," and since "bad"
means "good," then "sick" means "good." But from what I understand of
teen lingo, it doesn't work that way.
