I live in Beautiful British Columbia where it rains September to April, dawn
till dusk, morning noon and night, and ten two and four. What would be a
stupendous set of commute-worthy panniers from transporting books and papers
and the occasional set of clothes?

Bless you.

Forget the panniers. Get this for riding in the rain (it is from Denmark
after all, where winters are cold and wet): <http://www.leitra.dk/ >.

I'll back up the recommendation for the roll top ortlieb models. I did
1200 miles with a set in rainy Florida. everything stayed dry.

Okay, it's been a while since I've had
any first-hand experience w/ panniers.

But I've heard good reviews about
the Serratus Aqua-Not (available
at Mountain Equipment Co-Op.)

From what I've seen, they're very
toughly cordura, and stretchy
rainproof covers are available for 'em.

So that might be something to
investigate.

They might be more partitioned than you'd
like, but as I say, it's been a while
since I've used panniers, and I can't aver
to that.

Just go up to the information counter of
your local Mountain Equipment Co-Op and
ask for a copy of their latest catalogue.
Their various panniers will be listed
in there.

Y'know what would be really kewl?
A couple of Vancouver Sun canvas
newspaper sacks, with the Gothic
lettering 'n all, printed on 'em.

cheers,
Tom

Seems they call them the MEC Aqua-Not now.

Quite varied options. I like the local (regional), green vibe of the Osyter
Buckets, but the (German?) Ortliebs are distributed in Washington too. MEC
is the hometown favorite, but they're made in frickin' Thailand. The
buckets are UGLY, but cool ugly. Not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Serratus went under/got bought out, MEC took over some of their
more popular designs.

I have the year rounder for $85 with the zippered liner. I have not
tested it by putting it in water, but I have ridden in the rain with
it. Does seem a little on the small side.

Axiom's are great. Get em at Pacific for $80 a pair. Cheapest bags I ever
bought.

They fold over and secure at the top of the bag so no water enters. Also,
made of water proof material. Real sturdy bungee and hook attachment
system.

Ortlieb panniers don't leak. I think the roll-top versions could be
dropped in a lake and come out dry. They cost a bit though.

That's no joke. I actually tried that in the bathtub once, and the
inside stayed dry. You can carry water in those things. They're just
the thing for winter commuting. Just don't leave your bike clothes in
them while at work. They're stink-tight as well as watertight.

I think I paid $120 US for a pair, which seemed excessive until the
first time I commuted in snow and slush with them.
