I'm riding alongside traffic, up 1st Ave in NY, not much distance between me and the cars. Some jackass in full biking outfit flies by, between me and the traffic, literally two inches to my left. I really jumped. And the scary part is that the street has enough cracks and stuff in the pavement that I could certainly have moved left a couple of inches to miss a big crack. I would have hit him and we both would have gone flying. I can only hope that he would have landed in front of a bus. As he disappeared up the block, he shoots through a few pedestrians, no doubt scaring the shit out of them, and giving them a wonderful reason to hate people biking. I hate him, why shouldn't they? By the way, not a word that he was coming by, of course. Jackass.

Joe Speedracer's overtake of me coincided with an oncoming car, forcing the driver to veer sharply to his right. Joe Speedracer himself was dressed in dark street garb in the p!ssing rain, and had no lights on his bike. He must've been soaked at the end of his ride. He must've busted serious ass to get ahead of me though, because once he did he didn't get much further ahead of me. I could've busted his chops if I had the mind to But I would have had to hang a quick right to get to my destination, and downshift to get over the hump. So instead I hung back and let him push the cyclists' traffic light button for me at the next intersection, and I timed the light. If ya can't beat 'em, use 'em. > And the scary part is that the street has enough cracks and > stuff in the pavement that I could certainly have moved left a couple > of inches to miss a big crack. Whenever I get up to those, there's almost always either a fast upcoming or oncoming car preventing me from steering around it. So I end up having to hop it. If there's anyone behind me too much on my ass, that usually gets them to back off. > I can only > hope that he would have landed in front of a bus. I hate him, why shouldn't they? I understand your anger. But this guy is cruisin' for inevitable come-uppance. All kinds of stuff happens on the streets that we can either take in stride, or let it drive us nutz. How about those riders who, when you're waiting at an intersection for a break in the cross traffic, feel compelled to butt-in in front of you? There's something about the sight of a bicycle in front of people that pathologically compels them to simply /have/ to get ahead of it. > By the way, not a word that he was coming by, of course. NY I believe too. easy to google I am incensed as well by the rude bikers on my rides. You got the come from behind race attack you did not know you were in but it is obvious that it's the only way they could win so you just have to laugh. The buzzs I get more often from bikers than cars. Usually without a helmut and on sidewalks, jumping off where they have no business being etc. The people that look at you like they want your bike. NOW. Most of all, peds, drivers and bikers who do not care about the rules.

Oh no, there is no way I would catch him. I'm really not very fast going uphill and we were getting near the top of one. For those knowing the area, it's just three blocks south of the UN on First Ave. That's a bad stretch because there is a lot of traffic and the street is really crappy. Plus, as I said, it's uphill. About my least favorite part of the trip. Although in just a few blocks, by the UN, it is actually very nice. Interesting folks walking around.

And your probably right about them hating others on bikes as well. I ALWAYS slow way down when dealing with peds. And I am pretty good about announcing "on your left" when approaching another cyclist.
