What do you say we rename the newsgroup zen of bicycle maintenance and toss the dreary, old standard? Kind of a survival guide. Same everything but the name. Just entertaining food for thought. Zen is a way of life, religion, and philosophy and some of us might think that bicycling is a way of life or a big part of it. There may be more interest from people that have a different outlook, different view than we get here most of the time. Winter as a topic has been pretty essential this year no doubt. Cheers to those still chillin'. zoom zen

"Zen" has been turned into a trite keting word used by simpletons who want to seem profound while not knowing a single meanigful thing about any branch of Buddhism. The Usenet hierarchy name is just fine thank you very much.

Meaningless puke yourself.

What movie are you refering to? There was a book, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", popular many years ago. > You have a very negative view of what I was saying. While amakyonin was not necessarily polite in his opinions, I understand where he is coming from. I find the exploitation of "Zen" for commercial purposes jarring. For example, I own a Creative Zen personal music player. Would they make a Creative Episcopalian? A Creative Reconstructionist? Back in my salad days, I lived in a Rinzai Zen temple in Japan. (You can see its website over here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/shoryuji/index.htm) My personal experience with Zen, especially having also studied some other forms of Buddhism, is that it is highly disciplined. I believe that Zen approach to bicycle maintenance would have every tool in its place, a focus on finding the right technique and perfecting it, an obsession with the bicycle being clean and well-lubricated at all times so that the bicycle was always running smoothly. -- Warm Regards, Claire Petersky http://www.bicyclemeditations.org/ See the books I've set free at: http://bookcrossing.com/referral/Cpetersky

I wish I had the chance to do what you have done with Zen buddhists. I am reading "Red China Blues" by Jan Wong I have seen the Imax movie on Kung Fu (I think?) showing how they train in strength by hanging themselves from ropes by the neck as boys and building up to balancing the whole body on one finger. handstand style It is truly one of the most incredible things I have ever seen and I am in awe. If I find the title I can post it. I think they are monks too and therefore the tie in to religion. I would not last one day.
