You sure got that right

And I'm presuming that many RBR readers are "Young" and even if not, I
ran it by my younger daughter - who's in her Late 30's - and youngish -
and she feels it is, euphemistically, "Not Really Appropriate"

Well they have to try and divert our minds from the fact that they are
destroying the Eastway Road Racing Circuit & MTB course.

I wasn't aware that they were using any property that was currently in
use for bike racing

But just think that to go along with the bi££ion$ that the poor
Working Class taxpayers will have to cough up to cover the (virtually
guaranteed) deficit, you'll have a nice new Velodrome and, with a bit
of luck, maybe a Crit Course around the Isle of Dogz ;)

After all, the _Real_ East Enders got Shafted, so why not the rest of
you lot?

You know, I think that is actually worse than the Vancouver 2010 logo!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fboosman/10669846/

Dare I ask what the significance of those particular shapes is supposed
to be? I mean, I get that it spells out "2012" in the world's worst
font, but I hope there's some sort of meta-significance...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/other_sports/olympics_2012/6718243.stm

I checked the article. Doesn't appear to be. Organizers are blaming the
"Internet Generation." Never have so many done so badly by us so soon.

So, which GBR athletes will be utterly embarrassed to be seen near that
logo?

That logo is high-fashion ugly. It's like some sort of piece of trash
1980s graphic design floatsam (I'm thinking of the movie "North Shore"
here, specifically the first and second versions of the logo Rick
designs).

Well the old Shibboleth, "You Get What You Pay For" certainly doesn't
seem to hold true here.

400,000£ for that?

If it was me I'd sure as hell be clamouring for my money back

I'm pretty sure that they could have come up with a much better design
if they had offered a couple of Hundred Quid prize to the school-kid
who came up with the best design as judged by the public at large

But that, of course, wouldn't be Cricket, because how much could you
expect a school-kid to kick back out of his 200£ windfall?

On the other hand, there's plenty of leeway where you charged 400,000£
for something a junior employee bashed off in five minutes just before
quitting time on a Friday Night

As used here it is perfectly legitimate as it means words or a phrase
adopted by a group of people to mean a certain thing.

"You get what you pay for" is an old saying, and ergo a& shibboleth.

Shibboleth has numerous meanings depending who uses it and where they
use is

No, shibboleth does not mean proverb, maxim,
adage, aphorism, epigram, saying, or saw.

It does mean
1. A word which was made the criterion by which to
distinguish the Ephraimites from the Gileadites. The
Ephraimites, not being able to pronounce sh, called the
word sibboleth. See Judges xii.

Without reprieve, adjudged to death, For want of well
pronouncing shibboleth.
--Milton.

Also in an extended sense.

The th, with its twofold value, is ... the shibboleth of foreigners.
-- Earle.

2. Hence, the criterion, test, or watchword of a party;
a party cry or pet phrase.

Judges 12:5
And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the
Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which
were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said
unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;

Judges 12:6
Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said
Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then
they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and
there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two
thousand.

Today, in the English language, a shibboleth has also a wider meaning,
referring to any "in-crowd" word or phrase that can be used to
distinguish members of a group from outsiders - even when not used by
a hostile other group. The word is also sometimes used in a broader
sense to mean specialized jargon, the proper use of which identifies
speakers as members of a particular group or subculture. For example,
people who regularly use words like "grok" and "filk" in conversation
are likely members of science fiction fandom. Shibboleths can also be
customs or practices, such as male circumcision.

I knew all along what it means, so explaining it to me
is misdirection; or in plain words, lying. You misused
it, I said so, you demurred, I published the actual meaning.

You sir are about the stupidest piece of shit that ever walked shoe
leather

You Lie in the face of numerous Dictionaries and Thesauri all of which
would confirm that my useage of the word "shibboleth" was correct in
the context in which I used it

http://thesaurus.reference.com/search?q=shibboleth&x=42&y=6

Now it is easy to be wrong, especially when bashing off a fast post to
some newsgroup which, whilst it is of great interest to the
most, if not all, of the subscribers, is of little or no import to the
world at large.

And I always own up to having been wrong when such is the case and
usually ignore casual insults aired in this newsgroup, passing them
off as the price of entertainment or, occasionally, enlightenment.

However, you chose to push the matter in such an abrasive and
insulting manner, spouting religious mumbo-jumbo that some Witch
Doctor had crammed into your stupid head with that I felt I could
not let it go.

Next time perhaps you should not air your abyssmal stupidity in front
of the whole usenet.

Concluding, it is my firm belief that when they circumcised you, they
threw the wrong bit away

That is completely wrong. Shibboleth does not mean
saying, or aphorhorism, or saw, or maxim, or epigram,
or adage, or proverb. There are plenty of words for
aphorism and only one word for shibboleth. Do not
destroy the distinction.

You lectured me on the meaning after I brought up the
matter. The tail wags the dog.

So the Ephraimites programmed their NNTP bots in Prolog, rather than Lisp.

As suggested elsewhere, it's a blowjob from Lisa
Simpson.

(Also, the home countries.)
