Eddy Merckx joins list of unwelcome people in Stuttgart

The organizers of the Worlds in Stuttgart are shrinking the list of
people they officially welcome by the minute. Already the previous
ambassadors for the Worlds, Erik Zabel and Rudi Altig, were asked to
step down. Later it was Gregor Braun who stepped down. The winner of
the last Worlds in Stuttgart, in 1991, was also not invited. And now
the organizers announced that Belgian legend Eddy Merckx is not
welcome, either.

The organisers said that "we have to be a role model," while Merckx
found the organizers to be crazy, as Sporza reported on its web site.
He bluntly added that "dumb people are everywhere, even in Germany."

If they want to be a 'role model', refuse entrance to any current
rider, even a German, who has doped in the past...Like Zabel

It's not unusual there, and IMO it's cultural. "A place for
everything, and everything in it's place." I'm gonna toss out big
generalizations, but sociologists will tell you that it's easier and
more accurate to predict groups than individuals, and in this case
German bbureaucrats count as a distinct group.
Once they get started on something, it's done in incredible depth,
detail, and precision with incredible focus and direction. Think of it
like trying to turn an aircraft carrier.
The press and a handful of politicians got it off and running, now
it's become semi-mainstream, and they see it as defending the ideal of
sport. Once they got started this was as predictable as the earth
orbiting the sun. Unless theres a huge uprising from the young or the
liberals this isn't changing anytime soon. I don't see the liberals
there opposing this stuff because it's a way to be tough, and for "law
and order" without any real repercussions.

Zabel's getting a sex-change?

Somebody needs to give them Judith Arndt's kind of salute.

Are these organizers perhaps Nazi party members who've been
in deep freeze for the past 60 years ? What else could explain
such lunatic levels of fanaticism ? Perhaps the winner will
be required to do a Heil Hitler salute when going over the line.

Unless of couse this is an early April fools joke.

As these are _world_ championship races,
how can the host nation dictate? Even
Hitler allowed in Jesse Owens.

What is the reasoning behind Zabel and Merckx not being role models? I'd
think that they'd be especially the latter.

Role model for what role? The fanatical idea that anyone that ever
used drugs of any sort are unalterably contaminated for the rest of
their life contrast rather sharply with their issuing racing licenses
to sex-change cases.

Perhaps the promoter and host nation are fearful that some of the blood used in
doping came from a racially inferior type. Or maybe they object to the use of
"Jew science" in developing EPO or amphetimines.
