Picked up an older Fuji Monterey with a Suntour 7 derailleur. Bike "skips" every 3,4 or 5 peddles. Gears look OK, no missing teeth, but it feels like a tooth or two is absent when it skips - you get a sudden jerk down on the peddle - anyone with the cause ? (and solution ! ) many thanks -

(and solution ! ) many thanks - Hi there. Take a very careful and very close look at all of the sideplates on the chains links. What you are looking for is a sideplate that has come slightly off the rivet holding it together. I had a 7 speed chain on an old Miele, that I bought from a seller on Ebay, that did exactly what you are experiencing. Close examination of each chain link showed one sideplate that had just begun to separate. The plate was completely off the rivet but had not widened enough to fail. I was very lucky to catch it when I did. Good luck and cheers from Peter

Replace as soon as practicable. 2) Rear derailleur improperly adjusted. If you had a nice electronic rear derailleur like some nutcake here envisions it would automatically adjust itself. But since there is no such thing all you need to do is take it to someone that knows how to clean and adjust the shifting and you'll be fine. 3) Since your Suntour probably has a freewheel, it's possible that the dog clutches in the freewheel (another one of those things the nutjobs here don't understand) are sticking in old hardened grease. The freewheel could be disassembled in a shop, cleaned and lubed if that's all that's required. IRC is presently making some really nice freewheels but you probably want something a lot cheaper like the Taiwanese company that purchased the Suntour name presently makes. They are quite serviceable though the ratios are a bit wide for my tastes. My bet is on 1).
