Does anyone know why the Discovery Team has wads of cotton hanging out
of there noses during warm-up? Something to clear nasal passages?

Yep. I use a regular Poland Springs (or approved equal) water
bottle. The pointed tip seals the nostril, which allows you to gently
squeeze and release the bottle creating a water/suction pulse.

Another team is reported to be experimenting with more advanced air flow
enhancing techniques.

Q: Why do you beat your head against the wall?
A: Because it feels reel gud when I stop.

I was wondering the same thing, but was concerned that if I posted it
that I would have to change my name to "squid" and have several years
elapse before I could refer to myself as "non-squid".

Others used "breathe right strips" or something similar.
I saw no one with nostrils sliced open to really get things going.

I understand that they put in metholated Vicks so that they have clear nasil
passages. I was having a lot of trouble with altitude up at Lake Tahoe and
then tried taking a decongestant and was rather surprised that the "altitude
problem" disappeared. At no time did it seem like an alergy problem though I
do know that I'm allergic to some tree pollens and sage brush pollen as
well. So maybe there's something in this.

I would think nasal lavage would be more effective:

Works like a charm. A little weird at first, but once you get used to
it, you'll love how clearly you can breathe afterwards. I learned to do
it for singing, but it works great for athletic endeavors, too.

Your "altitude problem" disappeared because you took a performance
enhancing drug. Nearly all decongestants (anti-histamines and other
allergy drugs are not decongestants) are based on pseudoephedrine, a
stimulant. One normal dose could be enough to make you feel more
"normal" while at moderate altitudes.

Fortunately not a banned one however.

A sudafed and a red bull would make you feel even more normal.
