It isn't a question of "if" masters are fatter than open category riders
but "by how much". I'd like to do a survey and perform some statistical
analysis (I'm ignoring self-selection and self reporting bias) to put a
number on it. It's also a nifty exercise for my Stats class.

OK, I'm looking for volunteers from each group.

Open category/fatty masters cutoff is 35 years of age. Please submit
your weight and age to me at namlohip@comcast.net. Don't be shy and
please tell the truth. I don't want any "this would be my racing weight
if I could keep my face out of the fridge and ride my bike more often"
please. I need at least 10 in both age categories.

Thanks

Phil H

>From 1998-2001 I used to do about 80% Cat1/2 races vs. 20% Masters
Fattie races. Typically I'd do the Masters Fattie races when there was
too much climbing for me to be competitive in the 1/2 race. The
difference I saw was pretty significant: 15-20 lbs. and the difference
in speed up the climbs was very apparent.

The local Masters Fatties aren't lacking that much wattage compared to
the local 1/2s. But they don't do as much training, they don't recover
from hard efforts quite as well and they definitely weigh more. There
are some exceptions, like the 40+ Chris Walker who were (are?) still
competitive. But notice that dude trains a lot and never got fat.

thanks,

But you've already biased your observations because, like you say, you were
looking at the Fatties in the races that weren't as topographically
challenging.

I'll soften my earlier statement to say that the Masters you'll find at road
races are not fatter than the 20-35 year-olds at those same races. Perhaps
even they are leaner, especially if you include the 35+ folks doing the
category races.

Since this is rec.bicycles.RACING, I assume you are only interested in
people that race. If so, I wonder how true your hypothesis really is...

OTOH, if you're actually interested in all the recreational cycling
population, then no doubt you are correct.

Re racers... I see a lot of 20-something racers, especially in the beginning
categories, that still have what looks like a layer of "baby fat". No
visible veins, no ripped muscles. That's not to say they are slow--youthful
lungs and cardio-vascular systems are worth a lot.

So I think you should add another item to your list, namely whether the
person is an active racer, and maybe even a measure of how much racing
he/she does.

Thanks Mark, by using the terms Master and Open Category, my intention
was for this to be a study of racers or ex-racers. The null hypothesis
is, there is no difference in mean weight, corrected for height. The
alternate hypothesis is that masters are significantly heavier (fatter).

I'll probably do a one tailed t-test for a difference of two means and
also calculate the 95% confidence interval.

I still need at least another 12 volunteers.

I could really skew your results so I wont. To get a decent handle on
things before yet another surgery I wanted to find out where I was.
I'm still 5'10" and both electrical impedance and measurement put my
lean body mass at 185lbs, which is cool because I haven't lost much
muscle while getting fat.
