According to finance whiz Kunich, the dot-com bust was because Clinton
didn't try to stop investors from dumping cash into lousy IPOs.

http://www.thestreet.com/_tscrss/funds/investing/10341308.html

Fortress went public two weeks ago and doubled in price on the first
day. But what investors may not realize is that the five principals
pretty much stripped the company clean just before the IPO.

Total withdrawn in the two years before they took it public: $1.9
billion. Most of that was in the final few months.

This isn't just every penny that the company earned over that period
-- it's a lot more. By the time the owners opened the doors to the
investing public this month, the company wasn't just out of cash -- it
had negative book value. Liabilities actually exceeded assets by $507
million.

In other words, the owners didn't just clean out the vault. They left
a pile of IOUs -- and used the new money to balance the books.

When the overallotment is finally calculated, ordinary investors will
probably have put in $685 million.

Let's be clear. Edens and his partners have done nothing illegal.
Let's even go as far as saying they did nothing unethical.

They sold a stake in the company to the investing public on an "as is"
basis. And all this was disclosed in the prospectus.

I know that some around here would like me to be buried under a rock
someplace, Greg, but I don't quite know how to explain to you that both
MMan's post and my reply to it were somewhat broadly painted sarcasm. (Or,
perhaps in this case, sarchasm [1]?)

Actually, I was sort of surprised that you didn't take exception to
TK's recent assertion that "it's up to the government to regulate public
offerings so that there is really SOME value behind the offering", seen
here:

What's your take on that?

Give the poor guy a break (or should it be brake), how can you protect
something you can't grok. You should be happy he didn't send Irony a
Guantanamo .

H'mmm.... just dropped back in now the bike racing seaon is under way
again. Nice to see you've all been busily discussing bike racing in my
absence.

Did you hear that the French were taking the piss when they said they'd
taken the piss out of Landis?

Nah, we restrict ourselves to sex and drugs and the surge. I trust you

Cycled the same route on the anniversary of the - er'hrrmm - incident, and
the bend itself is nothing special at all. No-one but a complete fool
could possibly over-cook it and crash. Having said that, the pile of
boulders I crashed into is even more intimidating than my memory had
registered...

According to my wife (a nurse in a clinical pysch unit), the nice thing
about having multiple personalities is that at some point, you can begin
to charge them rent for staying in your house with you.

In keeping with his present trend toward referring to everyone he
doesn't like as some variation of "small" Tom will like the "big" part of
that, but I doubt he'll care for the "windbag" part.

As comparisons go, "the asshole of the universe/RBR" is far more
accurate analogy than the "Seabiscuit/Tyler Hamilton" comparison I read
earlier.

This is classical risk theory - known as Under and Over.
It was modified thusly:

(Pl)under and (move) over (there)

The trick is in the timing.

For the record, it isn't all that easy to prepare an initial public
offering, not least being all the time you have to spend in the
company of lawyers. They deserve a bit of compensation, here and
there, now and again.

Dumbass,

Quick! Look over there! The Al Qaeda guy we've had in Guantanamo for, like,
5 years, who confessed to planning the 9/11 attacks several years ago? Well,
one week before the 4-year anniversary of the invasion, the White House
wants you to know he just confessed again! Plus, Saddam Hussein was a very
bad man.
