I was there. The finish was at the closed for the season Mt Hood Meadows
ski area which was one of the sponsors. The number of spectators was
similar to what you would see at any race finish 60 miles or so from any
urban area. For what it is worth, many more people than would be there
without the race. The picture was taken from the spectator side of the
finish line so anyone there was behind the photographer.

Mike, the Sea Otter is mobbed but the "officials" side of the finish line
looks exactly like that picture of Mt. Hood finish.

I think you're assuming that the gap was behind him and not in front
of him. I think everyone had already gone home.
