dumbass,

there was some gesturing and commotion within the Milram train, so I
think something went awry in the leadout.

No, that was just Velo encouraging Petacchi: "Vai, vai!"

Ferretti in 2005:
"We do NOT improvise in the final meters"
"Well, Fassa hopes and wants to win because winning is beautiful,
because Alessandro is great, because Alessandro is strong. But all
that is not enough. You also need a little bit of luck. We need to
race extremely well. We need so many things, a lot of things, little
things, even a lot sometimes. But that's because winning is
beautiful."

dumbass,

thanks for clarifyng for rbr morons.

when zabel says "it's in my contract" it means he considers it his job
to help peta win, not that it actually says in his contract "you have
to lead out petacchi in MSR".

Petacchi is still complaining that his left leg doesn't have quite the
same power as the right (since he broke his knee on that side) and that he
can't do his sprints like he needs to. Obviously, the only way he can know
if it's completely ready is to try in the races. The sprint is different
from the main part of the race, so it isn't like he can tell before the
end if it's ready yet. I do wish he wouldn't essentially give up once he
sees that he isn't likely to win. As Robert says, that's why Freire wins.

That's implied, of course. Petacchi is the more recent winner.
Nevertheless, it still carries a note of bitterness because Zabel knows
what it takes to win this race--four times--and he was in with enough
strength at the end to pull past his own sprinter. Apparently Petacchi
was aware of his own weakness during the race (ref. cyclingnews
post-race comments) so he should have spoken with Zabel before the end
to settle the order of the last two positions of the train. Milram might
have had a better result.

Probably second.

It's sad to see someone of Zabel's stature, with the ability he still
has, being forced to work for a sprinter who admits he's not healthy
enough to compete for the win.
If Pettachi is healthy then it makes sense, but to hold Zabel back
and use him this way is insulting and stupid.
It's a sad situation.

Earth to Bill,

He's not winning anymore, not at the classics level. And I mean
that in the nicest possible way.

And Pettachi is? So clearly that it has to spelled out in a contract?

Well, I don't believe race tactics are spelled out in the
contract, if that's what you mean.

Years ago Samuel Abt did a story about Eros Poli. He noted
that Poli had spent much of his life, starting as an
amateur with the Italian National Team, leading out
Cipollini. Poli felt no bitterness at all in this. He
said that while he could produce a lot of good results, he
couldn't win. Not like Cipollini did. He made a lot more
money as Cipo's lead out than he would have made sprinting
for himself. So he was OK with leading out Cipo.

Zabel took a job as Pettachi's lead out. He also gets to
race for himself on many, many occasions. If Pettachi is
not capable of closing it out in the big races it is his
problem, not Zabel's. Zabel is not capable of stepping into
that role.
