I was much better when we were living in Germany, obviously, and It's always been easier for me to read other languages than speak them. 99% of the time I can get all the basics from what I'm reading pretty easily then it's off to the dictionary, or a translator for help. Except the Polish, or Lithuanian which I have about 6 words of each, and forget writing and spelling in either ;-) Bill C

There's not much to go on in the 50's, 60's. Even the guy who is researching Burton is asking for help. Elsy Jacobs had a book written about her exploits, the first winner of the worlds in 1958. In the 70's, better, the beginning of Velonews. In the 80's better still, another American resurgence since 1969 when Audrey McElmury became the first America women to win the World Road Championships. You had Connie Carpenter winning the Olympic road race in Los Angeles and Marianne Ann Martin winning the first women's Tour De France. But the real explosion of progress and news in women's cycling came in the 90's with an incredible amount of good riders. Plus the internet boom fueled the ability to access information. But quickly, in the 60's, Burton stands out above the rest, but Reynders was the clostest rival it seems. In the 70's, Genevieve Gambillon from France won the road race at the worlds twice in 74, 75. Josiane Bost was also an outstanding rider from France. She won various European seasonal awards five years in a row. Other good riders of that time were Keetie Hage of the Netherlands and Anna Konkina of USSR. In track there was Connie Young, Rebecca Twigg, Sue Novara and Sheila Young. Beth Heiden had a short run, and the well known Connie Carpenter. There were others. Then, in mid 80's Longo started to dominate with Canins, Catherine Marsal. Van Moorsel came in the early 90's, and the 90's was chalk full of awesome riders. Of course you know the rest, riders like Arndt, Watt, Rossner, Somaribba, Dede Barry, Linda Jackson, Luperini, tons more. GBMT

FQSC's Barbeau Comments on Geneviève Jeanson's Admission to Doping by John Symon September 24, 2007 (Montreal, QC) - We contacted Louis Barbeau, Director General of the Fédération Québécoise des Sports Cyclistes (FQSC), the association that governs cycling in Quebec, for his comments regarding Geneviéve Jeanson's recent admission during a Radio Canada interview (Part 1) that she doped with EPO, "almost all of her (cycling) career." Jeanson, 26, is from Lachine, Quebec, and was formerly "the golden girl" of cycling in Canada before retiring in December, 2006. Were you surprised by Geneviève Jeanson's recent revelations and at how long she'd been doping? Louis Barbeau: I was not so much surprised by her revelations, as she had been previously convicted of doping after the Tour of Toona in 2005. I was surprised and disappointed though to learn that she started this very early in her career (16-years-old), which coincides with her acquaintance with her coach, André Aubut. How well did you know Jeanson? LB: I didn't know her that well. I first met Geneviève in 1993 at the qualification event for the Quebec Provincial Games (note: Jeanson would have been 11 years old at that time). I could tell that she was a determined young girl. I saw her progress in the following years (1994-1996) and we granted her the possibility to race in the junior category (1997) even though she was in her last year as a cadet. This is in accordance with our rules allowing such a thing in special cases (i.e. with progressive athletes). She participated at the junior Road Nationals with the Quebec team from 1997 to 1999. After 1999 (her last year as a junior), our contact was very limited, as she no longer did any projects with the Quebec team, racing with Medico Sportif (2000) and Rona (2001). What's the general reaction in Quebec to this news? LB: I must say I was a little surprised that the reaction was so big, but at the same time, this is probably - and very sadly - the biggest doping scandal in the history of Quebec sports. The media coverage has been crazy. (note: this is apparently the biggest doping scandal in cycling history in Canada and likely the second-biggest doping scandal in Canadian sports after the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games where sprinter Ben Johnson broke the world record for the 100metre dash only to test positive for steroids). What do you think needs to be done to stem or stop doping? LB: We obviously need to learn from such experiences, as bad as they are. One thing to keep in my mind is the importance of having certified coaches, which was not the case with Aubut. The second thing is that young cyclists should be coached by club coaches, or by organizations, that are well-known. In the case of individual coaching at that (young) age, parents should be asking and checking the references of all coaches. They should also question a coach's motivation and finally be more involved and stay more alert to any sign of sudden changes with the athlete. Finally, no athlete should be isolated from the rest of the group-club at a young age. What message does the FQSC have for cyclists thinking of doping? LB: Obviously, we are very much against doping. We need to reemphasize as much as possible our position on this. Campaigns, like the one we began in 2006 (Roulez Gagnants au Naturel) are a very good example of what can be done. (click here for more info.) Finally, we need to promote examples of our athletes who are successful and are drug-free. This illustrates that it is possible to reach the top without having to use drugs and therefore cheating and risking one's health. ------------------------------------------------------------ Anne Samplonius on Geneviève Jeanson's Admission of Doping by Anne Samplonius September 24, 2007 (Stuttgart, Germany) - Overall I am happy that Geneviève Jeanson has finally been able to begin to come to terms with everything, with herself, to admit what she did was wrong, very wrong. I understand to some degree what influence and control both her father and (Andre) Aubut had over her, and realize that for the most part, she was a victim. I knew this all along, and my disgust over the entire situation was always more against those in control of GJ, which were Aubut and her father. I think it will take years before she fully comes to realize the impact this has had on a lot of people. She has stolen victories and money from a lot of her competitors, she has taken an potential Olympic spot from me, and she has lied to all of her fans and sponsors who really believed her. Sure she is apologizing now, but how do you replace a memory for an athlete? Look at Trixi Worrack who could have won the Junior Road World Championships. They can strip Jeanson of those medals but she stole the moment of winning from Trixi. As an athlete to win, to experience that thrill on the day, that can never be replaced. Those are memories that you cannot get back and those are the intangible things that she has stolen from a lot of people that can never be replaced. So a part of me says I should be angry at Geneviève Jeanson but I think there needs to be a lot more questions asked before we can fully blame the athlete in this case. I think the real issues here are the abuse of authority. If it is true that she was taking EPO since she was 16 years old... that really shocks me! What races at the age of 16 was she doing that she needed to take EPO? In Quebec? I mean, come on! A 16-year-old girl riding in local Quebec races taking EPO? That is scary. There is no way that a 16-year-old would even know about EPO or know how to administer it at that age without outside help, and certainly not for racing at that level. Someone was responsible, and if Andre Aubut was the one, there has to be some questions asked here... is there not a law that protects an underage athlete in this case? For me I have real concerns about that. An apology and admission of guilt is a start. I hope that she will do more. Maybe she can be a spokesperson, an example for other young women and girls, so that these kind of situations can be avoided in the future. One day I hope she fully understands the scope of what she has done and what was done to her so that she can become an advocate against doping and abusive coaches or parents. She has the opportunity now to become part of the solution, part of the fight against doping and abuse of authority. She needs to make her voice heard, stronger than when she was wrongly winning all those races. I think this is more then just another doping case in cycling and I hope that others can see that too. Anne Samplonius is currently in Stuttgart, Germany preparing to compete at the 2007 Road World Championships and sent us these comments regarding Geneviève Jeanson's recent admission of doping.

It's just too bad that Jeanson had those kind of performances that were fueled by drugs. She's someone I have a lot of sympathy for due to the totally screwed up situation she was placed into. Kinda like that Mormon girl who's now getting her story out and some of the scum charged and convicted. I wish that was Aubut's future, but not in Canada, and if it was prosecuted he'd get, maybe, a hundred hours community service. Quite a few of Jeanson's wins came at the expense of Lyne Bessette who I really like, especially as a person. BIll C

Yes. But also Katarina Witt was/is hot, and hotties sell newspapers. Jeannie Longo, although she is the object of Magilla's unrequited crush, is not as hot as Witt, thus L'Equipe has less reason to list her. It ain't fair, but that's sports. Ben P.S. So which male cyclists did they list?

It was quite amusing as she was the center of media attention and she gave an interview saying how great it was to be in this more laid back event and really get to know all her competitors. In fact, she spent all her time by herself and the only time she ever talked to us was to ask to borrow a 24" front wheel (so she could beat our person in the pursuit) which we gave her. -ilan

What, you mean leave the Olympics in the middle of the Games and quit the sport without getting a medal and ever answering to the cycling community why she imploded? Is that how she represents the U.S.? Twigg was from an era when there was little or no competition in women's cycling. And then when the Olympics came in 1996, she found herself outclassed. So she got mental and quit and then blamed it on Carmichael. Magilla

And it can be laid at her feet if you want to portray a simple, neat package of a reply, but it's somewhat more complex than that. As for the 'nobody ever heard of her again', Twigg was not one to dwell in the spotlight. Given her pre '88 accolades, did you hear anything about her until she resurfaced in 1992?
