For once, this is less of a joke than usual. I'm going to be making a very brief stopover in Amsterdam on Thursday and Friday, and want to know if there's anything especially noteworthy I should see in and around town. Last time I was passing through, I did the touristy-but-amusing two-hour bus tour, which included a pass through the red light district and a trip to the cheese shop/clog store (...) and a viewing of the Rembrandt windmill (or a Rembrandt windmill, I can't remember). So, with a day or so of tourism to grind through, any suggestions? We'll probably slot in one of the major museums (my lovely bride has that part sorted out), but I need to figure out the hard questions: -Bols experience or Heineken experience: is either worth 10 Euros? -Any other cute little brewery/distillery tours that are worth the trip? -any post-Tour crits in town that day? -anything else I should see? Where's a good place to rent a tandem if we have an hour or so to ride around? Also, I'd like to fit in, so if anyone can provide me with the lyrics to the national anthem (I think it's called "Dutch-land uber alles" or something like that), I'd appreciate it. The RijksMuseum is really great. An amazing variety of things there, from paintings to silversmithing to gunsmithing. And more! Well worth a visit. Restaurant de Luwte (26-28 Leliegracht) is quite good. Walk around. Much more fun. -- tanx, Howard Never take a tenant with a monkey. remove YOUR SHOES to reply, ok?

We call it the Rembrandt house, and I never noticed it has wings or vanes. When I was student I earned money showing tourists around in the Heineken brewery and I was always amazed most Americans really seemed to like the beer. Of course I pretended to share their enthousiasm. It always brought me a lot of tips. y other cute little brewery/distillery tours that are worth the trip? No -any post-Tour crits in town that day? Not as far as I know should see? Making a roundtrip of the canals seems to be a tourist trap, but it's really the best way to see Amsterdam in short time. We should never have given away Belgium in 1830... Besides, think how many Tours, classics, world championships, etc. we could have won, if we hadn't been so stupid. >> Making a roundtrip of the canals seems to be a tourist trap, but it's >> really >> the best way to see Amsterdam in short time. > > Good to hear. Last time I was in Amsterdam I bought speed-skates. I recall also seeing a weird circular bike made for 6 (or 8?) riders all facing in toward the middle so they could have a conversation. My vote is for just walking around and soaking it all in. Joseph

You could go for a canal tour this time, debarking to the right of Centraal Station. Mike's Bikes is also on that side but I have never seen a tandem for rent. Other touristy things to consider would be Anne Frank House and Our Lord in the Attic. Your lovely bride might appreciate a stop over at the Banana Bar. You might appreciate a stop over at the Grey Area.
