Last year someone set up live Google Earth tracking for the tour, and it
was a really good way to keep half an eye on Tour progress during the
working day. I can't find a similar service this year - anyone know of
one?

"A user named TimeTXU from the dutch community website Earthview.nl has
made a layer for Google Earth tracing the entire route of the three-week
bike race. Here's a direct link to the KML file. You'll also need Google
Earth, which is a free download."

If you can find a Euro topo, a split screen is possible.

GPS in NASCAR is outstanding! The system allows the viewer to analyze
the race, pick visual points of racing for example Montoya v. Gordon,
the hot setup going thru the field, and not rely on the announcing
team.
TrackPass RaceView
there's a 14 day trial good for the race at Watkins.

I don't know that anyone has implemented live tracking like in 2006,
but there is at least a KMZ overlay showing the routes taken by each
stage:
