A small project I've been working on for a friend, http://etapecycle.co.uk/. Handlebar photos and positions sent back every 5 minutes from today's Etape du Tour, hope it's relevant here. Martin

I'm using a TraceMe module, kindly donated by the guys at traceme.eu . It's a dedicated tracker module with a serial linked camera. It has digital inputs and I always intended to measure cadence too, but we couldn't quite get our act together to get that working. There has been a long peiod without data at the top of Port de Bales, I think due to no mobile phone signal, but normal service is resumed now! Yes, he did start early - 6.00 UK time, 7.00 in France. Best, Martin

Yes, having asked the question I went and found the answer from your website. How much does it weigh? I'm using an HP IPAQ 6515, which weighs 168 grammes 'bare' or 370 in an Otterbox enclosure - including GPS, camera, battery and, obviously, GPRS phone. I'm not sure how the battery would stand up to one picture every five minutes for ten hours, though. One problem is that I haven't found a way of turning the backlight off while a Midlet is running. > It has > digital inputs and I always intended to measure cadence too, but we > couldn't quite get our act together to get that working. It would be very cool to do full telemetry - cadence, gear selection, power. Speed and rate of climb/descent should be capable of being There's a bluetooth speed and cadence sensor module available from these people: http://soundofmotion.com/somo/products.jsp but I've no idea what the battery life is like or whether it's any good. Garmin do a GPS unit with speed and cadence pick-up, but I don't know whether you can interrogate these over NMEA. Still, all this stuff is coming, and within ten years people will think nothing of going for a ride and coming home to find all their performance data already logged and analysed. > There has been a > long peiod without data at the top of Port de Bales, I think due to no > mobile phone signal, but normal service is resumed now! Were you using http over GPRS to send the pictures, or were you using 'multi media messaging'? -- simon@jasmine.org.uk (Simon Brooke) http://www.jasmine.org.uk/~simon/ 'graveyards are full of indispensable people'

It was tucked into a small cycle bag fixed on top of the crossbars - it sent photos for about 16 hours before the battery died - I have a fine selection taken inside the trailer as the bikes returned to the start... The cadence sensor looks interesting, might be the way to go for the next run, I need to figure how I'd convert the Bluetooth signal back into TTL levels at the TraceMe box. All the data is sent back http, I'm guessing MMS would be more expensive. I'm not sure how you'd receive MMS at the server either - would that be straightforward, I guess they'd end up coming in as emails? Martin

Cool! That's a good weight for the performance, too - the photos of the box on the maker's website made it look quite chunky. > The cadence sensor looks interesting, might be the way to go for the next > run, I need to figure how I'd convert the Bluetooth signal back into TTL > levels at the TraceMe box. > All the data is sent back http, I'm guessing MMS would be more expensive. > I'm not sure how you'd receive MMS at the server either - would that be > straightforward, I guess they'd end up coming in as emails? No, I don't know how you'd do it either, I'm using HTTP. And I'm guessing that HTTP over GPRS is going to come out cheaper than MMS anyway. I'd be interested to know what hardware/software T-Mobile are using for the live telemetry feeds they've got from a number of tour riders' bikes. -- simon@jasmine.org.uk (Simon Brooke) http://www.jasmine.org.uk/~simon/ [ Disclaimer: This is a work displacement exercise.
