I'm always complaining about living in France, but I must admit that
there are some advantages.
Last night, I was watching the 2006 Paris-Roubaix on my computer and
had the TV on, and at some point the movie "Germinal" came on, so I got
to simultaneously see the race on the tranche d'Arenberg and the movie
much of which takes place under the Tranchee d'Arenberg. However, the
race was much more interesting than the movie.

The night before, even as I was composing yet another rant on r.b.r.,
the late late movie was "Laissez-Passer" which is an account of a bike
racer living in Paris during the WWII occupation (he was also a film
maker). There were some nice shots of him riding 390km in one day to
see his wife. Apparently, such treks were not uncommon, during WWII my
wife's grandfather used to ride 50km in each direction in a single day
to see his daughter (my mother in law). There are also discussions of
racing in the movie, apparently his favourite race was the Madison. The
movie has some amusing moments, he is continually worried about his
bike, even when under the most dangerous situations. It is based on
conversations with him in 2000 (he died in 2004 at age 92). One of the
best aspects of the movie is that they portray all the resistance
bigshots as truly annoying political types. For some reason, I was
never aware of it when it came out in 2002, but I definitely recommend
it, it's available on DVD:

The actor, Jacques Gamblin is exactly my age, and it was funny seeing
him in this role, as I had previously seen in acting in a movie where
he had a handicapped leg, and his acting was so good I was almost
convinced it was real.
