Maybe the French routinely mistake tourists to be other French
people? ;-)

Spock! For the love of God, learn to round off!
BTW, who goes to a polling website to vote "Sans opinion"?

Indecisive people who feel compelled to participate. Or maybe it's
part of their community service...

About the only place we ran into some REALLY nasty shop and
restaurant owners was in Berchtesgaden where we used to go quite a bit
since it wasn't too far from Augsburg, had a military vacation center,
and is beautiful and full of history. Unfortunately some of the people
hated tourists in general and Americans in particular. They shot
themselves in the foot though because the places just got ut on the
military "off limits" list, so they lost a ton of money.
On the other hand both Strasbourg and Metz were fantastic. Love it
here in New England and I'm getting closet to doing lots of things
like hiking, canoeing, riding, etc...that I do here, but
Kaiserslautern had all of that, except the canoeing and more and
better.
Tons of different things to do in both places. I really missed all
the fishing and shooting I do here when I was there, but we
Volksmarched and did tons of family rides, town events and Deutschbahn
day trips to check out all the cool events and historical places.
Gotta win a huge lottery award so I can split living between here and
Rheinland-Pfalz with unlimited rail and bus passes over there.
Hell I could come see you guys and Davey too. Life would be great.

Yes, I was lucky enough to live near Stuttgart for a year - I loved it.
It's certainly stimulating living in another country - everyone should try it.

Well, it turns out that there are twin cycling commentators, Godard
and Godart. Otherwise, yesterday's
comments hearken back to the 1999 Liege-Bastogne-Liege in which he
spent the last 15 minutes
of the race raving about how Vandenbrouck represented the renewal of
cycling after the Festina affair and how
VDB was the star of the new generation of clean riders.

During the coverage of Liege Bastogne Liege yesterday, France
Television commentator Jean-Rene Goddard twice stated that the
initiative to turn away Puerto riders was a good thing for cycling
(France Television is owned by the State, not ASO). Colour commentator
Laurent Jalabert made no statement regarding this issue (Jalabert
represented the riders in the 1998 Tour and led the withdrawal of all
Spanish teams).

Must the be German in me, given the poll result, and living in
Germany, because other than a few, I hestitate to even call them
incidents in Paris I liked France and had no problems. My sister-in-
Law is going back over to teach seminars this summer and my daughter
is doing an intensive language exchange program with the University in
Tours this summer. I can't remember the name of the village, but it's
just across the border from Pirmasens Germany, that we used to go to
about once a month for great fresh fish and seafood, and we did a lot
of wandering around in the border area with great results.
I'd say the same thing about France and the French that I say about
the US. Most of the people are way too down on their Countries, and
way to ready to do it. We've both got a lot to fix, but the core is
still incredibly solid.

PARIS (Reuters) - The French dislike themselves even more than the
Americans dislike them, according to an opinion poll published on
Friday.
The survey of six nations, carried out for the International Herald
Tribune daily and France 24 TV station, said 44 percent of French
people thought badly of themselves against 38 percent of U.S.
respondents who had a negative view of the French

The French don't seem to be real happy campers at the moment.

Which is a shame since most of the French are exceedingly good people.
Certainly better than your average New Yorker.

All that proves is that 56 percent of us lie. We are a nasty bunch. Why do
foreigners think that French are rude, arrogant and hostile to tourists? I
really think we go out of the way to be pleasant, compared to the way we

Sandy: As much as you might think you're joking, it's at least partly true.
My second trip to Paris (3rd trip to France) I decided to hang out in the
hotel lobby for a while, watching the goings-on between staff and guests.
Without exception, the rudest treatment was reserved for French vacationers,
especially, it seemed, those from the south.

The only times I've been subjected to rudeness have been pretty much of my
own making. From my almost-daily diary section at the time-
(http://www.chainreactionbicycles.com/diaryfrance.htm#notthegreatestday0726)

"I was definitely getting hungry & thirsty by now, so, on the way back to
the car, I stop in at the local Casino Supermarket. This is when the day
started to go seriously bad. I thought I had everything down good, and the
Euros sure make it easier to pay, but didn't realize that, in France, you
weigh your fruit & veggies yourself, before bringing them to the counter.
Not an especially wonderful moment for me as I'm holding up a long line
while they call for a young girl who (slowly) takes the bag back to the
produce section, weighs it, and comes back. So, we're back to the French
gaffe of the day."

I've been at least a hundred times in France (it's pretty close to Holland)
and I've met only once a guy who was rude, arrogant and hostile as without
reason. He was also drunk, by the way.

That's a lot better average than the Italian tourists I met in Paris.

On my last trip a woman at the supermarket checkout was incredibly rude
and unpleasant - until she realised I wasn't French, then she was all smiles.

Maybe she thought you particularly ugly for a Frenchman and then realized
you were American and was so relieved she forgot to be nasty?

Not all that convinced that it is all that unhealthy. I would hope
that at least 40% of U.S. citizens would have a problem with where we
are right now. I know I do. And I'm not doing enough to set it
straight, so I'm not too happy with me, either. Writing checks these
days isn't nearly enough.

Now that I've flapped the Monday morning red flag, let me get back to

Curtis, you aren't one of those corporate raiders, are you?

Briefly. Her dad said I had to give the lemonade stand back. Bad

Aside from having to translate that into English it is a pretty
interesting result don't you think Sandy?

It would be even more interesting if we knew how the people who answered yes
or no defined "implicated".

As you surely know, the web service caters to competition, so the large
majority see themselves as fit, competetive, etc. My thoughts - that the
great majority of voters in this poll see their perpetual losing (why else
would you read a rag, if you were on top and earning money?) as a result of
being clean while others dope.

Two local friends just returned in mid-season, leaving their pro teams. Not
because of doping, but because the motivation to win was destroyed, since
the better they did, the more spectators asked what they took to get there,
and the greater the suspicion amongst their peers.

Latest poll results, 5 times the earlier sample :

Oui 14,77%
Non 81,82%
Sans opinion 3,41%

Yes, I know. One of the other side effects of the anti-doping campaign. And
not only the riders of today are the victims, but even the riders of the
past. Two or three years ago I met Lucien Teisseire, one of the champions of
the 1940's and early 1950's. He told me: once they came to me to ask about
Coppi, Bartali, Bobet or Robic. Nowadays they only ask: what kinds of doping
did you take?

I hadn't understood it was a poll on internet. It eases my mind: even if the
question wasn't so clumsily formulated, it would have been completely
unreliable.
