It sure looks and sounds like the IOC was aware from the beginning
that China would have serious problems staging the games. You have to
wonder who got the kickbacks, and favors this time, and how much the
price has gone up since Salt Lake.

You can be sure that the pollution is not going to get better anytime
soon.
I've been to Beijing and you can see all the crap in the air.

All it will take is a total shutdown of industry, commerce and private
transport for a month, strong winds and a lot of rain.

If anyone can do it the Chinese can.

He was being facetious, but anyway:

http://jamesfallows.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/08/one_year_to_go_until_080808.php
http://jamesfallows.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/07/now_377_days_to_the_olympics.php

They'll probably just utter platitudes until a couple
of months before and then come up with some really
draconian temporary ban that palliates the problem,
although it doesn't solve it.

You've obviously never been to Beijing. The air pollution is so bad
you often can't see to the end of the block. If you blow your nose,
the kleenex is black with soot. Not a good place for athletic
events. I'll be surprised if many records are broken at the Beijing
olympics.

I do recognize that your post was tongue-in-cheek, but with 2 pros
holding TUEs recently flagged for inhaler use ...

"excessive inhaler use" is one potential problem.

Is "air pollution" a performance-enhancing substance banned by WADA?
Of course not!

So what's the problem?
