Mountain bikers are in essence "tin can" shooters compared to real
racers. If they competed on standardized courses then measurements
of ability could be taken. But riding, boasting, and just disturbing
the outdoors brands many of them as "lumpen proletarian". My apologies
to those who are responsible and true competitive athletes.

If you're into time trials and other 'measurable
competitions' the last thing you want is for a bunch
of punk kid mountain bikers to show up and make
everybody look like fools.

There's zis guy you ought to meet sometime. He feels that wildlife need
habitat off-limits to humans. And that all Mountain Bikers are liars. And a
few other things. You'll get along great. You can chill with him over in

What's disturbing is seeing, and hearing, a bunch of cretins
disturbing wilderness areas by going off designated trails.
They should try some time trials and see just how conditioned
they are. But like shooting tins cans, measureable competitions
are avoided by the untermensch.

I wonder if you even know what you're talking about. As pointed out -
bicycles aren't allowed in designated wilderness areas. And if they aren't
designated wilderness areas and you don't like them out there in your
wilderness that's just so sad. I think I'm going to cry for you.

Time trial indeed. Only wankers without a clue would compare riding a
mountain bike with a time trial.

Of course that's disturbing. But what does that have to do with "More trails
are not needed" and your assertion in a prior post that-

And what does "true competitive athletes" have to do with anything? Are
people who hike in the wilderness also supposed to be "true competitive
athletes?"

...or as part of a huge pack train of gear-laden horses
that automatically creates its own road everywhere it goes.

Or you can go helicoptering in with several hundred pounds of gear and
guides as I've seen a couple of times before.

It is actually spelled "pompous"

Ahem, I think that spelling appropriate in this case. I've been riding
mountain bikes all over this side of the Mississippi and one thing that
always struck me was the dearth of hikers. For every two dozen mountain
bikes I've seen out in the middle of nowhere I've spotted one hiker and
usually it was some wrinkled old crone whose comment would be - "Are
bicycles allowed on this trail?" even though she would be standing NEXT to a
sign that said - "Bicycle Trail".

Banning bicycles from offroad areas is almost always motivated not by any
kind of safety issues but in order to limit the use of public land by upper
middle class snobs who believe that the "wilderness" belongs to them and
them alone.

You're right--mountain bikes (and other mechanical conveyances) _are_
banned from wilderness areas, and have been for decades as part of the
Wilderness Act, written before mountain bikes were even invented. Live
with it. You can go into wilderness areas anytime you want by walking,
running, cross country skiing, or snowshoeing.
