He's trying to become the first person to win the Points jersey without winning a stage. Hm. What's the latest in the Tour that a rider has worn green without winning a stage? (The answer "Credit Agricole, last stage" will be summarily rejected, but LIVEDRUNK thanks you for your witticism.) -- Ryan Cousineau rcousine@sfu.ca http://www.wiredcola.com/ "I don't want kids who are thinking about going into mathematics to think that they have to take drugs to succeed." -Paul Erdos

Too late. The first was Stan Ockers in 1955. > Hm. What's the latest in the Tour that a rider has worn green without > winning a stage? Our friend Thor Hushovd in 2005. Benjo

The first was Stan Ockers in 1955. Huh. By the example of recent years, I would have thought it nearly impossible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Tour_de_France http://www.memoire-du-cyclisme.net/eta_tdf_1954_1963/tdf1955.php I see that back then, they were using the "lowest points wins" format. http://www.cvccbike.com/tour/eddy/green.htm This would have made it far easier for Ockers to win green (consistently high finishes would do it, but you'd still have to get near the front of the sprints. Ockers had an average finishing position of a bit better than 15th. So it's fair to say the 1959-onward point classification is an entirely different animal. Though I'm sure that the points scoring system has varied in lesser ways from year to year in the modern era. > > Hm. Virenque won, what, 7 KOM jerseys? Did he win a stage each year? I seem to recall at least one in which he didn't. More difficult to do now, since they end-loaded the points system. --Mike Jacoubowsky Chain Reaction Bicycles www.ChainReaction.com Redwood City & Los Altos, CA USA "Ryan Cousineau" <rcousine@sfu.ca > wrote in message news:rcousine-4DE20B.17420011072007@news.telus.net... > He's trying to become the first person to win the Points jersey without > winning a stage. > > Hm. It happened twice that he hadn't won a stage (1996, 1999), just like Trueba, the first winner in 1933, and many others. Benjo

I'm pretty sure Sean Kelly did that and would suspect other riders have as well, such as perhaps Zabel. -- JT **************************** Remove "remove" to reply Visit http://www.jt10000.com ****************************
