It's hard to tell under the shoe covers, but he switched from custom shoes (Rocket 7, I think, but I'm not certain; no buckle) to Sidis, under team/sponsor pressure, and he claims the change in shoe fit was coincident with the onset of tendinitis.

I didn't find any photos of him sans covers from the Tour, although you can see him in the Dauphine.
