Subject: Paris bike shops, the revenge
Well, it turns out horrible bike stores have a positive purpose after
all. I did a search and discovered that only Cycle Laurent, the most
horrible bike shop in Paris, was the only reasonably close bike shop
carrying the shoes I was interested in, so I decided to go there and
try them out, so I could later order them via internet. The abuse I
previously suffered there would relieve me of all guilt. I asked my
wife to come along so that I wouldn't lose my cool before I could try
on the shoes, and I gave her instructions to prevent me from telling
them after that I was going to order them online, so that I could
return to the shop is a similar need arose. Well, it worked great, and
I now know exactly which size will fit me. My wife told me that the
owner wasn't that annoying but just plain retarded. This was confirmed
by his statement that Shimano road shoes are no good because they don't
allow you to use standard cleats (isn't it about 5 years since they
switched to Look spacing and since Armstrong used them to win the
Tour?). In case anyone still thinks I did something immoral, my wife
pointed out to me absolute proof that this is a totally unacceptable
shop that merits contempt: there is a sign near the entrance that
states that inflating tires is free for people who bought their bicycle
at the shop but 1.50 Euros (1.94 $US) for everyone else.

Dumbass -

Nice one.

I did a similar thing once in high school. This redneck was always
trying to be a bully to everyone. One day when he wasn't at school, I
peed into his locker, surely inundating his gym clothes at the bottom.
The next day he wore them with no complaint. Everyone was laughing at
him and he didn't know why.

thanks,

K. Gringioni.

The only Shimano cleat I can think of this applying to is the
essentially-defunct SPD-R design, which used two bolts in a North-South
line on the shoe.

This was preceded by Look-compatible road pedals (the notorious "Lance"
models) and succeeded by the SPD-SL, which is compatible with the Look
bolt pattern. They may have discontinued Look-compatible road shoes in
the brief SPD-R interregnum, but those days are as long gone as the days
of the Time 4-bolt pattern.

Except on the track. And on my shoes, because the still function fine.

Fair enough. I had forgotten about the trackie thing, too.

But of course, none of this affects in the least the curious case of the
ignorant bike vendor.

That's many orders of magnitude worse.

No matter how badly things go at that shop, it's still inexcusable, in my
humble opinion (as a bike shop owner, of course) to waste someone's time
trying things on, getting advice about something, whatever, knowing full
well ahead of time that you're not going to buy from them, no matter what.
Darwin should take care of the shop in time; situational ethics (excusing
your own bad things because they're bad) isn't called for.

No matter what.

OMG. Maybe Darwin doesn't know Paris exists??? Yikes! I didn't think there
was *anything* you could say that would budge me from my prior position. But
this is really, really, really close. : >)

This _is_ your Darwinism.
